The only thing I'll say about the 6.0 is the turbo sounds soo nice spooling up.

My father-in-law has a 99 F-250 with the 7.3. As I understand it, the 7.3L that was made between 98 and 02 is the best.

BTW, He has 298k mi. and no major engine work performed.

dang, maybe you had a lemon? we've towed lots with our 05 and it's fine, except for the brakes they seem a little weak.

Maybe every time I went to the dealership and told them the problem they'd frown and say "yup, we know what it is." Thank god I had the warranty. $13k in repairs Ford had to eat. Definitely weak brakes. I got a big brake kit for mine.

Ford: 2000-2003 (7.3L Super Duty) I'd shy away from 99 as it's the first year. 6.0L and 6.4L I'd not even contemplate.

Dodge: up to 07 since most anything 5.9L is good, 6.7L gets into all the emissions garbage. I personally would shy away from 98.5-2002 as early 24 valves like to have bad injection system failures. Also, I would shy away from 1994's and 2003's as there always seem to be teething problems with new body styles. The later model year you go, the nicer they get, early trucks really tend to show their age, bad! Unless you want to pour money in to the transmission, don't buy an automatic! Buy a stick shift, spend the $$$ to buy a good clutch and happily shift your own gears!

Duramax's seem to be getting trashed bad here but, I loved my 2007 (classic so, old body style) I had it for four years and 107k of trouble free miles! The Alison rocks and that truck was rocket ship fast!!!!

If the 98 you are looking at is a 12 valve I say go for it! That's the holy grail truck right there- the upgraded interior and 4 doors but, the all mechanical engine! If it's a 24 valve, I'd shy away from it.

Oh, and Google the block casting thing, I forget the numbers but, certain Dodge block casting numbers are prone to cracking and failing!

the only problem with the injection system is ppl not doing the lift pump when they started modding them, do big injectors and or programers with out doing the lift pump i.e. FASS or AirDog they would burn up the injection pump.

I mentioned before its the "53 block" also...the 24V engines ROCK too, only problem with them is if you start modding them and dont do the supporting mods for the injection pump specifically the lift pump. if you dont youll burn up the injection pump and thatll run $1200-1500. Other than that there a great engine that can make massive power and have great reliability.
