Poplock (PL5300) 2009 Tacoma with Cam -Install Tutorial

Thanks for the write-up/tutorial, it was a big help. The hardest part is getting the little plastic rod holders out of and back in to the metal brackets.

 

I'm thinking about getting a tailgate cam... My 08 doesn't have so will connect to my double din nav. My question- where does Toyota run the wire from the tailgate to the rear body.... I'm concern with the tailgate moving with the wire.

 

Been meaning to post a thanks for this write up. I was going to pay someone to install but the write up gave me the confidence to do my own mod. Installed in about 45 minutes (had a little trouble with the plastic rod holders - they are a little different in the '11 model and I really didnt want to break them!). Had a little help from my 10 year old son and we completed inside of an hour. Works perfectly, feels solid and my only complaint is that the new handle isn't quite as smooth as the factory handle. I did use the spray graphite which helped.

 

glad I wasn't the only one...they frustrated me for a good 15 minutes lol.

 

Thinking of buying that lock soon. Amazing write up.. probably one of the best i've seen. Anyway just wondering what you guys paid for your lock. The stealership is selling them for $75....??? not bad i dont think..haha they wanted $380 to install it...ya right.

 

Amazon has them for ~$50-$55 usually.

Thank you for your step by step tutorial. I just recently purchased a 2012 tacoma double cab a few weeks ago. Everyday I have been slowly working on my truck. I found your tutorial a few days ago and decided I would install this myself. Without your help I would of never figured it out!!!

Just installed this same one for a friend yesterday. Remember to add some litho grease before you close it up to prolong the in between grease add.

 

I just installed mine last night after a long day at work. Getting the camera off the old handle wasnt easy. I also win biggest idiot of the year award. I had my cover on the bed. I had all my tools, phone and keys to the new handle in the bed. I finished the install and shut the tail gate. The New handle comes in the locked position by the way. Took me 45 minutes, a screw driver, and a magnetic reacher tool to get the keys out of the bed. The handle works great, but does take more force then the OEM handle.

 

Too funny. I installed a cover and the lock on a friends Taco. I rolled back the cover prior to installing the poplock.

 

Don't feel bad, when I installed mine a few weeks ago I didn't get the arm into the slot correctly and when I shut the tailgate it wouldn't open. I had to do like you did and basically break into my tailgate since I'd left my cover on.

 

Glad Im not the only one. I hope you were able to fix it.

 

EDIT: Make sure to test fit with the tailgate panel removed and with access to the bed.

If you don't have the drill bit adapter for the torx attachment , try to get one. It will make it so much easier and quick work of the task at hand. It will make the removal of the tailgate panel super easy. JAT

 

Yep, got it opened and took the tailgate cover off and fixed it.

Both of the above are really good tips. If you have a bed cover, make sure it's opened! And test it several times before putting that plastic tailgate cover back on.

The torqx bit isn't expensive, everybody should have a set anyway so if you don't now's your excuse to buy them. The correct bit and a power drill makes taking the cover off easy.

 

i just installed the PL5300 on a 2013 Tacoma Access cab. these instructions were a big help but i would add a few things in case my experience was vehicle or year specific.

-small needle nose pliers made life a lot easier with all of the tabs and "squeezing."

-grab a very small phillips screwdriver for the tiny screws on the camera holder

-the tab to remove the camera from the harness had to be pried outward lightly not squeezed. pliers came in handy here.

-and using the pliers to squeeze the red and black tabs was very simple.

-my PL5300 didn't come greased up so i'll have to add some on the major contact points.
