That actually sounds just about right. Almost all vehicles will do something similar to this. The first quarter take lasts WAY longer than any other quarter

I might be concerned if this continued over the long term, but like Cowboyz said you'll get way more miles between the full-3/4 marks than you will get between the 3/4-1/2 marks. I can usually go anywhere from 125-140 miles between the full-3/4 marks, then around 80-90 miles between the 3/4-1/2 marks... that's a huge difference. Also, assuming you don't let your cold engine idle for a long time, consider that your 3-mile drive is largely running on the "choke" or open-loop cycle (or whatever the cold/rich fuel mix setting is called during the several minutes before the engine reaches operating temp). That will *kill* your fuel economy.

Unfortunately, my engine is just really warming up by the time I arrive at the park and ride where I leave my car. I know that is where i'm killing my fuel economy. :(

Linda - the best savings comes with the commuting, so the offset to the short, inefficient ride to the parking lot is a small price to pay. That said, I can appreciate the concern.

As for my truck, during the summer months I'm 105-107 miles per quarter tank. Less now that we have winter blended fuel and cooler/cold temperatures to contend with.

I used to have a a TRD supercharger on the Tacoma, converted back to NA when I bought the Tundra. The SC was tons of FUN!!!
The fuel tank gauges are not all that accurate. The only way to accurately measure your fuel consumption:

Fill your fuel tank (fully) and reset your trip ODO to '0'.

Drive until you need more fuel.

When you refill your tank (you need to fill it up - full again), then divide the miles driven (as shown on the trip ODO) by the gallons needed to refill the tank.

    For example,

Let's say you drove 237 miles. You take 12.66 gallons of fuel to fill up the tank:

    237 / 12.66 = 18.72 miles per gallon

Linda, It can take some break in time for the mpg to improve with new trucks. I had the 06 Pre-runner 4 door short-bed 6 cylinder. I drove it to 63,000 miles and averaged 21.5 mpg from around 30k-62k miles, wasn't that good at first. Traded it last month for the 2013 long bed with more airbags for hauling grandkids, bluetooth NO more phone tickets, and backup camera because neck surgery makes it harder to turn my mellon. The mileage now is an average of 18, it will get better with time, but what will fuel cost be by then, Ouch! Love my truck, got a peragon bed cover yesterday, nest romik r.boards, with pic's to follow.

I keep a log book in the truck and enter each fill up div. by mileage driven. Last fill up was 14.8 miles. Last fill up was avg. 20 mpg. Mostly highway and some city driving. Winter is always less mpg. I have the v6 4.0 liter and have added the undercover hard tonneau cover and stainless bars on the side. I love my truck so i have to get used to the idea that gas evaporates quickly LOL.

My friend has a 1975 Monte Carlo that is a total beater car -- it gets around 12 mpg.

Since i got my 13 taco, ive gotten bewtwwn 300 and 320 miles per tank whether is was highway or city it didnt seem to matter much. Just got a new Extang hard top bed cover with all else the same and got 365 & 370 subsequently miles to the tank. Extang advertises a 10% increase in mpg and so far its at LEAST 10 percent better mpg. Its a noticable difference in driving distance. Very happy so far, but i wish the tailgate locked! It has a rearview camera where the lock would otherwise be located.

Good to hear a cover helps the mpg. I just installed my new Peragon cover. Hope it helps as much as yours has you.

I have an "undercover" tonneau cover with a lock. The lip fits over the tailgate. My tailgate does not lock but with the cover... it is now secure.

    Looks Great....

I ordered the iron Cross bars yesterday, and a Volant air intake, Pics when the bars are installed. I had to buy a tailgate lock in order to keep my bed "secure" Aaah I know that if someone wants in there gonna get in. Off to a meeting in SF this morning near the Giants ball park, Time to see how secure my tailgate lock and Peragon bed cover really are..☹☹☹
