Are there any tool boxes that don't go right behind the cab like that?

Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but yes, these boxes acan be mounted anywhere - you can slide it all the way to the back of the bed if you want (might not be good for weight distribution, but if that works better for you in the back then it is possible)
Also, there are other boxes that mount to the side rails - long skinny ones that run the length of the box.
There are also others that mount inside the bed behind the wheel well, i.e. between the wheel well and tail gate, about as wide as the wheel well, so you still have the usable space of the bed as wide as the space between the wheel wells.

Any brands that sell toolboxes that sit in the bed?
I almost bought a box for my truck but didnt like how it cut off the visibility from the tailgate.

Well if everyone else is showing off, I will too! Bought this girl back in 1998. We call her Barney. (It is hard to tell in the photo, but it is Barney purple, and my little girl named my tool box Barney, so it stuck) Stuck in all these drawers are over 25 years of collections including some tools from my stepfather that he used in the army during Korea. Total replacement value of everything in the box: About 35k not counting the box itself. Now if we want to talk about shop equipment I own, we would have to add another 40k or so to that.

how do you guys like your toolboxes? i have been looking at these kobalt slim boxes and cant decide if i want it or if i want one of the bigger/wider ones

have you guys tried to put any rifles shotguns in your boxes? im curious to see if they fit well. also, have you put a lot of weight in there, does it feel sturdy? ive heard people say that they feel like their made of tin foil :notsure:

No guns BUT mine carries everything needed for the Tacoma and My "MACK Office"...1/2 the box has Tacoma "Bits";recovery gear, tools not riding in the smaller box in cab, doubled up boxes for grease guns and the other 1/2 has everyday supplies for the Mack;3 boxes full...:)

This CRAP about being tin'foil rails me a little bit...Mine gets STEPPED on every time I wash the Truck...I am too dam short to reach the top of the cab ;)...it is opened everyday at work for said Mack supplies and even passes the "grand kid" test when they are "playing" in the back;poor lid can be opened 20-30 times per play session :D....
