Wilson needs the rear TSB

We drove up to NJ last Saturday (heading home Sunday) to visit family. Yes, NJ is the worst place on earth for a vacation but that's not what this post is about.

So it's my wife, my 7 month old child, myself, and probably less than 400lbs worth of crap in the bed. The roads in the south are better than those up north for obvious reasons (traffic quantity, weather, etc) but I lost count by Virginia how many times the rear "bottomed out" aka hit the bump stops. We're talking about I95 here, not the backwoods roads of East Bumblef*ck.

We went to the Philly zoo today and, while Philly roads are some of the worst anywhere, the thing kept bottoming out with 4 adults and the aforementioned child in the cab and only a stroller in the bed. This is completely unacceptable to me and makes me really hate my truck right now. And for those keeping score, this is officially my first complaint about the truck and it's a freaking major one. I almost feel it's too damn dangerous to drive around here.

Anyhow, the first thing I'm doing when I get home next week is calling the dealership and getting that TSB done. There will be no argument, it will be done immediately.

I hear you Wilson....my suspension lasted 1.5 years driving up I-295 to McGuire and back. My rear end started to look like it sat lower than the front, and after seeing a co-worker who has an AAL and that my warranty is about to expire, I said....."F it, it's time to get this fixed"

Now that I had the TSB done Tuesday, my truck rides like it did on the test drive when I bought it. I can't beleive Toyota continues to put the 3 leaf pack on the 09's....they're absolute crap....

 

You'd be surprised but I did the math once and the folks on here represent a very small portion of Tacoma owners and we dedicate a large amount of time to the Leaf Spring TSB...Lots of folks don't have a issue with it cause they like the cushy ride and don't haul anything.

I'm also going to guess some bean counter @ Toyota figured out that it would cost more to mass produce that 4 leaf spring and scrap the 3 leafs than to replace the springs ont he truck that belong to folks who complain.

You are probably correct Brunes; however the first time said person does haul something and they see how much stress is put on the truck's suspension, or they take their truck to the dealer down the road to get the suspension fixed and get hit with the $1300 bill for new springs; they'll be cursing the Toyota name.....hmmmm seems Toyota might be walking the path of the Big 3. It takes a lifetime to build a reputation and less than a minute to ruin it.

 

I bottomed out with 2 dirt bikes in the bed, gear in the cab and 2 adults in the cab (total about 900 lbs). They were small bumps but I hit those bump stops hard!

I have the TSB but plan to AAL as well.

Definite lameness setting in. It's the acceptance of it & complacency on consumers part that continues to make it possible & this standard operating procedure for all companies will continue to fuck us little by little because they can.

Embrace the new standard of sucking due to the few that even take notice of or despise half ass business practices much less let it be known that it sucks. It will only continue to get worse.

Your musical expertise would've been much appreciated at the hearings where big 3 & gov robbed us all blind by pumping billions into dead on arrival companies who've practiced the aforementioned bullshittery too fucking long. If only a portion of a percent of Tacoma owners are upset with the performance- and the rest don't care or don't know the difference- then it wouldn't be wasteful to make a change that would cost more money?? It's not a safety issue or they would be required to recall the truck and replace the springs.

The tax thing I do kind of agree with- We spend too much...and it's gotta come from somewhere.....

 

I'm fully aware of the dollar & profit margins driving this sad type of practice. Half ass will ALWAYS suck. Everything at the consumer's cost will ALWAYS suck. Are workers supposed to be able to take pride in their work when knowingly what they're sending to market sucks? OOPS, forgot, it's just about the paycheck. People quit taking pride in anything they do quite awhile back since they aren't allowed to because that would cost the company too much money. Road to ruin FTW!

 

did you bottom out with the tsb or was it before the tsb? and, do you still plan to AAL along with the tsb? so, 4 leafs plus a helper

edit.... I just read your post at the other tsb thread. wow, that is going to be a stiff ride with 4 leafs and a helper, you think?

 

That is way I got the TSB done on my truck 2 months after I got it. Gotta love Jersey roads man. BTW there are a ton of people who vacation at the Jersey shore, I wont be leaving my house at all this weekend.

 

Obviously this isn't going to convince you. But again- For your purposes it sucks- and they have a TSB to fix it when you and others like you have a problem.

All the other folks out there either don't know (cause they don't have a preconceived notion of a "truck" ride) or don't care (cause they don't load the truck up and they like the ride they get) and they don't think it sucks.

So why throw out 200,000 springs and order 200,000 more when they can keep doing what is more or less working and just replace springs as folks ask for it?? (Besides the fact that it obviously offends you and your sense of pride in your work)

The concept of just throwing shit out there when it knowingly sucks & waiting to see if anyone notices is flat out lame bullshit practice is the only point I'm making here. Whether people notice it or consider it flacid to be done in such a manner is of course completely up to them. These dickless leafs have been being knowingly put on these trucks for over 4 yrs now. Do you consider your truck being valued as shit after factory warranty expires if all the TSBs have not been done as a good thing? Bet not. Will the dealer sell vehicles for less if TSBs have not been done? Hell NO. Is it deceptive practices for them to not tell you about TSBs when considering purchasing just like hiding accidents or flooding or odometer fraud or salvage title when you sell a vehicle? Hell YES. Let's consider things beyond the cost to me to make my truck the way I think it should be, that's not the point & always at your own expense.

 

Yes, I bottomed out after I had the TSB leaf pack. I am going to AAL on top of the TSB but I do not think it will make it too stiff. I drove a 1st gen for 2 years and the stock suspension is about as stiff as I have ever felt. I got used to it and actually liked the added stability if created on the road.

When I AAL, I am also adding 5100's, which are valved better and should offer more dampening <-- shouldn't be as rough.

 

I agree, the stock springs are just plain "sorry".
