Does anybody know a good CCW handgun? Im pretty light so id need something light but i dont want something small. i want at least a 9mm. Id like a 1911 but i heard they are heavy and have quite a kick to them.

Question for kodiak, Are you required to tell a police officer thats pulling you over that you do in fact have a concealed gun? If it is just a routine stop for speeding or something common like that?

    well shit.

went and bought new wires to relocate the solenoid for my winch and while i was double checking the wiring diagram i see that is says 2GA.

when i bought the cable i asked for battery cables (probably not the best idea). Oreiley's gave me 4GA cables.

did i just shoot myself in the foot and spend money on the wrong cables?

Well, a few different things at play here. How important is this 'kick' factor to you? 9mm will offer less felt recoil than a .45 if everything else is equal. Generally however most things are not. Heft and weight will actually help to REDUCE recoil however this isn't always ideal for a conceal carry package because you sacrifice some performance for weight and size since this is a more important factor for most but there is some degree of both that you will want to retain. Glocks are very popular carry weapons for a few different reasons. They're inexpensive, they go bang every time and are a lightweight package while offering you a high capacity. They tend to be a little bit thicker than other options due to being a 'double stack' so they have a bit more thickness to them than a single stack design which will yield a lower capacity. Personally, I think that the 9mm is the perfect package for your primary concealed weapon due to it's felt recoil (ie ability to quickly & accurately place follow up shots) and capacity which could be paramount in a self defense situation if you've been watching any news lately. It's not always a single bad guy in a dark alley that you knew you shouldn't be venturing down. These days capacity is key and carrying a spare mag isn't a bad idea either as they are known to fail and are small, lightweight and inexpensive (well, before the recent shit storm of panic buying that is). Personally, I'm a larger dude so I choose to carry a G19 (compact 9mm) along with a Rugler LCP .380 as a backup gun in my front pants pocket and a spare magazine for that gun in another small front pocket. Wearing 5.11 pants makes all of this disappear in case you were wondering. Another popular choice for concealed carry is a G26 which is the subcompact 9mm. There are some newer single stack options which are also worth considering but harder to find generally and that's the Bodyguard and the Shield both from S&W.

This is actually a VERY hotly debated topic and so long as you do choose to carry you really can't do it wrong. Some options work better for some needs than others and you will discover what works best for you over time. There are also entire forums dedicated to this subject so don't be surprised if you don't lock this down with a single post on a regional thread of a pick 'em up truck forum. :D

To answer your question the state of Colorado doesn't require you to disclose that information to a contacting LEO. You should know that when you give them your driver's license and such they will see it when they pull your info and most state that they would appreciate you informing them that you have a firearm. Just know that as the law reads it's not currently required however.

If you go through a CC class they will tell you the law on that one, but I belive you must tell the officer you have one and where it is in the vehicle.
as for what gun I like the compact 1911 in .40 but you should look around and pick up a few to see how they feel in your hand, what is good for one person isnt always good for another.

No, that is not how the law reads. It's different from state to state and Colorado does NOT require that you inform a contacting officer that you have either a permit or a firearm in your possession. You can't lie if they ask but the information is NOT compulsory.

And to your weapon recommendation... why? Dude just said he doesn't want a handgun with a kick so you offer up the most 'snappy' of handgun rounds for a carry weapon? You also realize that .40 isn't a NATO round so when shit hits the fan as it's headed it will be one of the most difficult handgun rounds to find... right?

Keep it simple: 9mm or .45ACP (none of that GAP crap!) and with my experience I prefer 9mm for the reasons I mentioned. Get a good solid defense ammo like Hornady Critical Defense or Ranger SXT (I prefer the former) and the differences between the varying handgun rounds are negligible these days. The bottom line handguns poke holes. They don't have the same effect as a high velocity rifle so you want more opportunity to poke holes in vital items. Otherwise it doesn't matter what caliber you use. Placement trumps caliber every day of the week and twice on Sunday and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know anything about today's ballistics studies and how that applies to today's situations. You need to get that perfect shot and more rounds in the same size package means more chances of that perfect shot. Not to mention the variables once you introduce multiple threats. The last thing I want is limited ammo in a multiple threat situation. Those extra three or four rounds of 9mm vs .45ACP in the same size firearm frame could be the difference between success and failure when your very life is at stake.

I will however end with agreeing that your advice on find out what is right for you is indeed the most important thing. Realize that 'comfort' generally only plays a role in classes or competitions and in a fight for your life the gun you actually carried because it wasn't cumbersome is the best possible firearm for that conflict. Getting a Glock 17 because it fits your hand does you no good if you left it at home that day because it was too big for your summer Tshirt. Shoot as many guns as you can but take the 'feel' with a grain of salt because once adrenaline is pumping it won't matter as much as how quickly you can get shots on target in a panic fire situation.

The springfield XD is a good compact for CCW. I would go with a 40 cal. for any type of gun you decide on. Good knock down power and not quites as much kick as a 45, but better protection over a 9mm. However it all falls down to personal preference. Visit your local shooting range and rent a few guns in different calibers to see which you like best.

I asked a denver cop a while ago about how they like it handled when pulled over. he said you don't have to tell them about it if you don't want to. obviously if they ask, yes. but otherwise it is up to you. if you choose to tell them, be sure to have your ccw license out along with your drivers license with hands on the wheel before they reach your window.

Return and buy 2GA cables. You really do not want to overtax the cables when you really need the pull.

You are right about not having to tell the officer, but that can change from county to county so he needs to look it up from his county. I looked it for my county El Paso and that is what is says, also things are diff in denver then colorado springs as far as carry rules.
I recomend the 1911 in .40 cause the kick isnt that bad, it is what my wife carries, she used .45 till she got the small gun and the kick was too much for her. so if the 1911 compact in .40 isnt too much for my wife, then it should be fine for him.
As for 9mm I hate them, I have seen guys in Iraq unload the full clip and the attacker still keep going. But he need to shoot many handguns like you said and get what "feels" right for him, cause if it doesnt feel right he wont want to carry it then it will just become a pricey paper weight at his house.
As for how many rounds the pistol can carry, if certain senitors get their way no hand gun will be able to be more then 10+1 so you will deff need more then one clip, I think it is always good to have more then 1. But its just my opinion, and Im sure over the next 14 months things for me will change.
I start gun smithing school at the Colorado School of Trades in LakeWood on monday.

It's a state law so your county was likely just referencing the state law.

Funny you say that about 9mm because I still haven't been able to get anyone with that stance to sign a waiver & stand in front of one of my 9mm firearms to prove that theory. Trust me, a 9mm w/good defense ammo is plenty effective.

And, in the name of all that's holy, it's a magazine or mag for short and NOTa clip.

No, it's not. They're all magazines. A clip is a very specific thing and you would never find one in a handgun.
