ABS disable

Is there anyone out there that has used an OEM style swtich (fog light swtich or diff-lock swtich etc.) instead of an autoparts store toggle swtich as a disable for the ABS. If so do the existing blank swtich incerts just pop out of the dash?

 

Any luck disabling the ABS? My ABS has an Issue and I'd Like the option of turning it off.
Any easy way to describe which wire you're slpicing to put in the disable switch?

There is a fuse for it, just put a switch in line before it. You'll get all sorts of idiot lights on the dash though.

I had some issues with my gas miser corolla after 150k that I just clipped the fuse to get the damn abs to not work.

 

there's a small connector on the left side of your battery, towards the bottom. uplugging it will disable your abs. you may have to disconnect your battery once you plug it back in to get rid of the dash light...been so long since i've done it that i can't remember if it resets itself. not as convienient as a dash switch, but gets the job done.

 

ABS is better for people who aren't used to advanced driving techniques. It takes a lot to keep a cool head in a skid and remember threshold breaking, not to mention incorporating avoidance steering into the mix. ABS takes the breaking part of it and does that for you so you can focus on steering. However, ABS is not as effective as threshold breaking to those who know how, and can utilize it properly.

I drive with distance between me and the car ahead and am comfortable doing the same on Ice.

To fix this the dealer is surely going to want $1000 so I just need to shut it off for now so it doesn't CAUSE AN ACCIDENT! Which I came much closer with the ABS kicking on than I ever did with out it.

If it was as much as cleaning them and they worked again I'd be all for ABS but just like all the other bells and whistles on cars today the repair often isn't worth the use.

I noticed the fuse in the ABS bos and will try that. I'll also try cleaning the sensors first but something tells me that won't help. I'll also check my bads to see if there is any significant issues there. I don't know much about he back breaks and adjusting them so I'll have to wait until I learn that trick.

Bingo. I am one of those who learned using threshold. I have driven a variety of ABS systems and I find that the current evolutions seem to activate long before threshold (which means long before lockup). ABS is alright for the untrained drivers panic stop on perfectly dry pavement. In ANY other conditions ABS scares the hell out of me, especially winter or low traction conditions.

I wish that there was more emphasis on driver education and stricter licensing criteria rather then the plethora of "safety" features on new vehicles. ABS, blind spot indicators, backup alarms, auto park, proximity decelerate, etc., etc. IMO most systems are an attempt to make up for a general lack of driver intelligence. If everyone was required to show proof of attending quality drivers training in order to get a license then these systems wouldn't be needed.

Sorry a bit off topic. My point is just that to many getting rid of the ABS makes perfect sense.

 

There are 3 fuses related to the ABS on my 2011 Tacoma , Everyone says just pull the fuse to disable the ABS .... Well ... Which one ? I must disable before I get in an accident . This is the most dangerous breaking system I've ever had on any truck I've owned ....

 

Do everyone on the road a favor and leave your ABS as-is.

 

sde780 . If you read the posts on here you will note that the ABS is a big problem on the Toyotas . To say " leave as is " certainly is not the answer we're looking for . If you drove a truck with this system I think you would change your tune in a hurry . But thanks for answering my post ....

 

I do drive a truck with this system. My tune is not changing - 99% of people on this forum will be safer with ABS on in a dangerous situation.

 

I spliced a wire at the abs computer and used a switch to turn it off...works great

 

I'd like to disable ABS by pulling a fuse or fuses. I know ABS no.1 and ABS no.2 are in the engine fuse box.

Has anyone disabled their ABS this way? I found one thread where a fellow pulled both fuses but he said he got lots of nasty lights and sounds, ended up putting one fuse back. I'd be more confident if I heard from more fuse-pullers.

I really don't want to do a switch mod. The wiring scares me and I don't give a damn about having a switch, I just want the ABS off forever. Thanks in advance.
