some winch questions

so i am going to try to mount a winch behind my tube bumper, so on the roller fairlead it is bolted into the winch mount. My skid is at a angle ( \ )

can i mount the failead into my skid plate? or does it have to mount to the stronger winch plate?


also what would be the best way to mount the winch plate behind the bumper, i was thinking of welding in a new crossmember or some shit.

Should be OK for the fair lead mounted at that position...trailgear.com has a generic wench base plate that might be what you need. Would also suggest in synthetic rope instead of steel rope for safety. And with a synthetic rope you can use the low profile hawse fairlead instead of a roller fairlead

Edit: a 12k wench might be way over rated for our tacos..you should consider a 10k instead. My 10k rated wench has served me well more times then I can count

 

or i could cut a square out of my skid and just mount the fairlead to the winch plate, then it would be recessed a little too.


the synthetic is a good idea!

 

Don't cut and recess the fairlead inside...you need the fairlead to give a smooth operation of the line without any sharp edges or angles that will otherwise damage the line.

Synthetic is the way to go for safety and strength. No sanctioning Offroad organization will allow steel rope to be used in any competition just to give you an example

 

it would most likely just be inside the skid likje a inch...just to get away with the skid being at a angle and the winch plate being straight up......would you rather have the xrc8 or that winch.

 

Agreed. I have two 8Ks and they have done me well. Ive seen bumpers for the tacos that are only rated to 10k.
You could always start with the fairlead on the skid (personally Id say this is too weak) and if you get movement of crumpling you can make the hole and mount to the winch plate.

I have the xrc10 but honesty they might be the same winch which is really made by T-Max.

I still don't recommend recessing the fairlead inside...unless you can garuntee a straight pull each and every time you need to use it so the line won't rub on the skid .....

 

even if the fairlead still went out past the skid a fair amount? if it was the roller fairlead. They look pretty wide.

 

As long as you can make sure the skid won't touch the line when operating the winch at whatever awkward angle/direction the line is going..

 

okay thanks for the help....im going to take some measurements tomorrow and see if it will fit.

 

Looking at your pics... I would build a brace out of plate steel and span it between the bolts holding you skid on, then I would mount the fair lead to that.
