I was working with Toyota when that logo was announced. It was created at the same time as the Lexus logo, to which it's supposed to bear a family resemblance. They kind of got logo fever after Acura was launched, thinking that a symbol was classier than just type.

We referred to it internally as "the jockstrap."

Well, if the meaning of the symbol is so obtuse that all we can do is guess, then it really doesn't matter what was intended. It's basically an inkblot. If the designer intended to convey anything else then they failed. To me there is nothing about it that says "Toyota" unless somebody told me so. It could just at easily be Toro lawnmowers,.......or a vulva
