Fishing out of a kayak?

Here is my wilderness systems tarpon 120. I also have the "ride", which is the updated model in the 14 ft length.

 

Never tried to fish out of if but heres my mount yakima's on the stock roof rack It's alittle bit of a pain in the ass to get up there but it works.

I fish a lot from a kayak.
I have a Heritage Redfish 14'. It's a great all around yak. The longer the yak the straighter it'll track and easier to control.
Basically you have 2 types of yaks...sit on top (SOT) or a sit inside. The SOT's are a lot easier to fish out of. The sit in's are good to fish in cold weather because it helps keep the wind off your body.

One thing to consider before buying one is what you're going to use it for. Also figure out if you're going to use it for long or short paddles.

You can outrig a kayak to the point it becomes a small bass boat. I wouldn't put too much thought into rigging it until you decide on what you're going to use it for.

My Redfish 14 is a fantastic yak. I'm 6'4, 240lbs and it is a very stabile yak. I can stand in it if I need to sight cast. It has plenty of legroom for me and I can store everything I need on it. I'll post a pic of it later.

i go kayak fishing a lot. like every weekend. and i use a pelican which is great! and very affordable

 

I have a WS Tarpon 100 and a Ocean Frenzy for the wife. They are both small but easy to load and unload. We go in the surf at the beach and fish rivers. The good thing about a sit on top is, if you flip with a little practice you can get back in and keep going. Its actually pretty easy to get back in a sit on top.

i love fishing out a kayak i make a run down the rappahanock river about 5 or 6 times a year small mouth fishing...its all about the comfort though i fish easily for 10 hours and of course by the end of the day my butt and back are killing me because i dont get to stand up unless i find a rock to get stuck on or a small sand bar but if youre freshwater fishing its an awesome idea because you have the manouverability that a canoe doesnt especially if you get your line snagged but i know people that go out in the chesapeake bay by the eastern shore to go striper fishing....just find one that suits your needs and i cant stress enough the comfort of the seat it just makes for a bad fishing trip if youre not comfortable

 

I have a Hobie Revolution and WS Tarpon 120. Pedal power is definitely much nicer when fishing from your yak. I've taken it all over the Chesapeake Bay and the shore.

I have the same Kayak and I use it in lakes and rivers. The seat sucks balls but if you put a aftermarket seat in you are good to go. Very stable. I feel more safe in it than I would in a SOT kayak

 

I just got a Native Mantaray 12 ft. sit on top kayak. I love it. It is short enough it fits in the back of my Tacoma with the tailgate down. Easy to haul and load/unload. I have fished out of it 2 times with great success. I mainly fish lakes and rivers in Tx. I shopped for a kayak for 3-4 months. Talked to lots of people, joined some kayak web sites, and tried out about 12 kayaks. I settled on the tarpon and native sit on top kayaks. I bought the 12 ft mantaray since it was in my price range. I got a 2010 with the rail system in front of the seat (seat is the newer style and real confortable). The rail system allows me to add what I want to the dash that I made and I did not have to drill any holes. I plan on taking this kayak to the Tx coast later this summer or early fall and fishing in the bay flats for redfish. Overall I love this kayak. No matter what you do....talk to some people, decide what you want then test drive them. Remember what ever you get, you will have to load and unload it...then haul it on your vehicle. And and remember to buy a good life vest that fits you well when you are seated in the kayak. Wear plenty of sunscreen and carry a knife with you. good luck

 

i'd go with something like a native ultimate 12 ..you can even fish while standing in these things. ...a hybrid is definately the way to go.

 

Ballsy move having a banana on your boat while fishing. That alone would be enough to get thrown overboard with the boys that I fish with.

 

Ocean Kayak Big Game 'Angler Edition'

I didn't read through the entire thread, sorry if this was mentioned...but Ocean Kayak makes an 'Angler Edition' of a few of their boats. It comes with flush mount rod holders, modified scupper hole for a transducer, battery tray, and a tackle box. Other than that, they are basically the same boat as the regular. The flush mounts are nice, but I purchased a Ram Mount RamRod that works way better for holding the rod while fishing! Can mount that anywhere you want.

Under 300$ Light, perfect for beginner. Read the reviews. Go to youtube and type in "pelican persuit" and watch the videos. Awesome kayak. You can add a rod holder. A milk crate for tackle box and your ready to go.
