Which truck to get?

Hello, hows everyone doing? Im new to this site and about to buy my first tacoma. My question is which truck do yall think I should get. The ones I have been looking at is a TRD offroad 4X2 or a Texas Edition tacoma. I found a used TRD for about 24k with 13000 miles and I got a quote on the Texas Edition brand new for 27k out the door. I would be using the truck just to go to work and go to school. Not sure if I should go for looks or the TRD, is the TRD any good to good to off roading even though its not 4X4. I really like both but not sure which would be a good choice. Any help would be appreciated.

I am embarrased to say, I live in Texas and didn't even know there was a Texas Edition Tacoma... I shall now recede into shame.

Putting that aside - If you are getting a V6 there isn't too much difference in the MPG between the 4WD and 4x2. If you are going to do any offroading (or if you live in the Lubbock/Amarillo Ice/Snow area of Texas, I would suggest the 4WD. If you don't get the 4WD, I recommend getting the Limited Slip Rear End. I believe this is available on the TRD Sport.

Personally, I own a 2.7L AccessCab PreRunner SR5. My only regret is that I did not get the LSD rearend. I will be fixing that situation soon enough.

that is very true the lsd in trd sport makes a differnts i dont do much off roading but about a month ago i went throw some mud with a friend of mind that has a jeep 4x4 and i kept up pretty well every one was very impressed it just seemed like my truck had to much power to get stuck i only have a few upgrades like a borla exhaust and borla filter drop in thats about it but g/l with you choice which everyone you get i will be a good truck

 

SORRY, SIDETRACK - How much was the Borla drop-in filter? I didn't know they made one.

 

that actually came stock with the xsp package but i know k&N makes the same drop in filter just not sure how much

TacomaDUDE, I would just go with what you enjoy driving. If you feel that you need off-road capability, an LSD rear end will get you through most of the little stuff, but 4WD is a must for anything serious.

According to some other sites, this is all the Texas Edition adds on...

It seems more like a Texas pride thing more than anything else. If you like EXACTLY what is on it (exhaust, tires, 20" rims, etc...), then it is worth the money. The dual tip Borla exhaust is the only selling point to me. If you are going to change any of that out, then don't waste your money - get a lower model and mod-it-out.

 

I agree... if you dont' need any of that extra on the Texas Edition, I would save my money. You can always addd upgrades to your truck later with time and money. And one other thing.. if you'll never take it off the pavement there would be no need in the 4WD, which saves your some $$$! that was my choice.. got the doube cab, 2WD, V6, SR5 Prerunner. I didn't get any extras, like wheels or sides steps.. I'll add all that later on! Oh and with the TDR I couldn't get past that hood scoop! Ughhhhhhhh... not to pretty to me.. but my opion. to each their own. Good luck on your decision!

 

IMHO if you are just using the truck for work and school, do not usually carry passangers, and are looking to save some cash, I would get the 4-cyl access cab. I have a an '07 PreRunner SR5 double cab that I just love....one of the most fun to drive toys I have ever owned. Having the extra cab for me is a necessity because I have a family and like to haul buds playing golf or whatever.

Another thing, if you are considering purchasing a two or three year old Tacoma, I would recommend that you consider a new one. The cost difference will not be much and you can get better financing on a new truck.....and, it will be NEW!

I was out to buy a used one myself.. but at the dealership I noticed I could buy a brand new truck for the price of ones I was looking at. And the financing on the new truck was great! 3.9% So I ended up with a brand new truck with only 9 miles on it.. can't say its got that low now.. had it a little over 2 weeks and it has 750 miles on it now... I just can't stay out from behind the wheel. I've never driven anything so fun to drive.. its awesome..

And the double cab.. I got it because I was replacing a car and need extra room for family and friends!

If you plan on doing any off roading but nothing too serious, much like me, then the TRD off road is great. It will get you through some tough spots with the locking rear. I'm in the same boat as 007 though, live in TX but never heard of a Texas addition Tacoma. I can tell you that I think you'll be able to get a new TRD for about the same price as that used one. Just so ya know the hood scope is only on the TRD Sport not the TRD Off Road.

 

The hood scoop was on all the new TRD's on the lot when I bought my truck.

 

Hum it's not supposed to be on the Off Road, maybe your dealer switched out some hoods.

I just saw a post of yours on another thread:
"I didn't get the TRD because I couldn't leave the chrome bumper or grill.. I feel in love with the chrome, but I'm not that crazy about the mirror or door handles.. but I can deal with it if I have to.."
I'm beginning to think maybe you haven't seen a TRD Off Road, they have all the same chrome that the SR5s have. If I ever get off my lazy but I will post some pics of my truck.

 

If I hadn't wanted a 2.7L so badly (read: I do too much highway driving), I would have gotten EXACTLY what TRDeity has. It is perfect. I just didn't want to pay for the fuel. I have had my truck since Jan 1, 2007 and it has 6000 miles on it. :

 

If you're only using it for transpertation from A to B, I don't see the point in getting the TRD. Limited Slip? There's nothing on the road you'd need that for, and if you're going offroad, you shouldn't be looking at the 2wheel drives to begin with.

 

Thank you 007, I was happy for the fuel costs coming from a full sized Dodge (avg 13MPG). I got mine late January and just passed 1K , of course I have my mustang to take out at night .

 

do your research find where the best deals are so you don't have to have buyers guilt oh btw welcome to TW

 

Sorry.. I stand corrected. I didn't see any trucks on the lot with TRD and chrome bumpers or grills.. All the trucks they had were the sport TRD. Sorry, Sorry, Sorry!
