How many miles on ur timing belt?

I had 285k on my original. My buddy had 290k and swapped it out. He said it looked like it was in really good shape. His water pump was fine too.

Not saying you should go as far as you can, but I don't think the timing belt is going to break, probably the water pump will start leaking or something will fail. Never replaced mine obviously but there could be seals and stuff that can fail. My 88 4 runner had a seal fail and it made a huge oily mess in the driveway.

 

This is my first Tacoma, so the 5vz is 3.4L and it is a NON-Interference engine, Is this correct? thanks, again sorry. Only had the truck a little over a month & still learning the ins & outs of these trucks.

Ok I am just learning all this non interference motors and such as I just finally got myself a nice 2000 tacoma 2.7 5speed. So do I have a chain or belt I cant find anywhere which one it has. As I dont know when or if it has been changed out and it has 240,000 kms on it. And so what is non interference and what is mine if it is ? thanks in advance for all the help

You have a timing chain which should never wear out. I believe the 2.7L is interference but you don't need to worry about that.

Edit: just saw your second question. A non interference engine is built in such a way that there is no possibility of valves and pistons colliding in the event of a broken timing belt or chain. When those parts collide the engine is destroyed, or at least very badly damaged in the form of bent valves.

change mine at 200k only coolant leak from water pump hehe...now everything is fresh again

 

So... here's a question.

2002 3.4 with only 33 K miles but 11 years old. Would you change out the timing belt and associated gear or let it go 'til 90K or you saw evidence of water pump issues (whichever came first) ?

 

Well even though its a TOYOTA, My 2003 DC w/V6 is going to get an appointment to have the timing belt replaced! Its @ around 100k. Had a friend last spring with a newer Tundra w 115K miles have the belt break. I dont want bent valves and a new engine on the horizon. With a kid in college, extra money is scarce. Preventive maintenance...

 

The 5vz is a non-interference engine, even if the belt breaks I don't think it will hurt the engine at all. You will just be stranded though...

 

I'm not a mechanic, so perhaps others on the forum could add their $0.02. However, I got an estimate from a local shop, and I swear he told me that I could end up with bent valves if the belt broke. Perhaps he was just trying to get a couple hundred in labor?

 

from what i gather, its pretty in depth and time consuming if you haven't done it before. you should replace the water pump while you're in there.

2.4 and 2.7 4cyls are chain and lifetime

 

The 3.4 L (5VZ-FE) is a non interference engine. No internal damage will occur if the timing belt breaks. However, it is not advised to wait until it breaks to make the change. Also, as mentioned, change the water pump, thermostat, belt tensioner and idler pullies when you have it apart.

Did mine at 105k last month. The belt was very gently worn. Prolly would have been ok for another 100k. My water pump had a tiny leak at one point that had sealed itself and the rubber gaskit on the thermostat was a little shrunk. Honestly though i like working on my truck and i didn't mind the 10 hours of work. I needed the experience with my truck and the peace of mind of knowing i didn't have to worry about those things again for the rest of the life of the engine.

 

Did mine last week. 180k (original). Timing belt was a mess and water pump was leaking. Did it myself. Took me 12 hours to finish everything. Noticed better gas mileage after change.

 

Mine went 130k, mechanic said all belts look fine.....but water pump had a small leak.

Don't forget about the water pump too. mine went (water pump) at ~170k. Locked up on me driving 65mph and did this to the belt. Aircabinman kit went in after.
