I was in a 1st gen double cab.

Sorry, I was out sick the last two days.

The truck is shifting better than new now. The shifter feels great, and the 4th gear problem is completely gone.

I was amazed at the crap we found down in that shifter ball area!

To all - if anyone w/ 1st-gen 5-spd manual Tacos are having any shifting problems, PolarIce & I have become very familiar with the fix for this. I bought new parts from Marlin Crawler, and they work fine, better than OEM, IMO, but the old parts were OK. The problem was that the area below the shifter pivot point was filled up with gravel. Not sand, not mud, fecking gravel!! :facepalm:As in little fingernail-sized chunks of rocks, in a bed of grease. I don't know if this is from the various river crossings I've made, or simply all the 4-wheeling I've done over the last 8 1/2 years (I bought the truck new in '04).

We took it apart more than was probably necessary, but I'm glad we did, as we were able to get the crud out from under the shifter area before it dropped down into the transmission. It wasn't that hard, once we figured out how stuff worked.

PolarIce, thanks again for your help, encouragement & advice; I probably would not have been successful w/o it. My bones also really appreciated the warm, windless environment to work in.

This forum is full of really decent people; I'm glad to have found it. :dancingbacon:

Oh, and no, I didn't bring poor PolarIce any bacon.

Thanks for that. The funny thing is the clock in the garage wasn't set correctly, so what we thought was a 3hr job really only took 2. Oh well.

    Glad to help.
