He beat me to it. Chocolate in ANY quantity can be dangerous. The dark chocolates tend to be more dangerous but NO chocolate should EVER be allowed to be eaten by any dog. Treat it like poison because it basically is. A related piece of trivia is that it can also be fatal to humans but takes a much higher quantity. The smaller your dog the more dangerous it can be. I lost an entire night sleep crunching the numbers when our little girl (14lbs) got some dark chocolates and it was close but she was just barely under the threshold for it being dangerous. She didn't get too much and I was really amazed at how little it can actually take. As a rule of thumb keep ALL chocolate in an upper cabinet somewhere were they can't get to it to avoid issues.

My lab will jump at the oppertunity to eat anything. ;) not just chocolate. I have seen many dogs eat it and be just fine. Don't buy a sissy ass toy dog. :) jk ost. Like I said mine have ate it and none have had a problem. When I was training dogs I asked the guy I trained under and he stated to me that only pure cooking chocolate would be a problem because that's when my pit bull was eating it at moms. My lab will eat a rock so I'm not to worried about him getting into chocolate.

Rocks can be safer than chocolate. Most dogs will just pass rocks as long as they are small enough. Do the research and you will see that even 8oz of milk chocolate can be dangerous to a 44lb (average) dog. That's not much. If your dog is 50lbs you're talking just over a pound of MILK chocolate and slightly over 8oz of dark chocolate. The darker the chocolate the higher the danger. It takes less than an ounce of bakers chocolate to create symptoms in a 44lb dog. Basically, having gone through it, I cringe at the thought that ANYONE would blow off the thought of their dog getting chocolate as no big deal. Your dog and get VERY sick and even die quite easily from something as simple as chocolate. It should also be noted that until your dog reaches a toxic level they will display ZERO symptoms. The line between toxic level and able to metabolize is VERY slim. Not worth the risk.

Grapes & raisins are also a bad deal for dogs FYI.

Items to avoid Reasons to avoid
Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death.
Avocado The leaves, seeds, fruit, and bark contain persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Bones from fish, poultry, or other meat sources Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.
Cat food Generally too high in protein and fats.
Chocolate, coffee, tea, and other caffeine Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea and be toxic to the heart and nervous systems.
Citrus oil extracts Can cause vomiting.
    Fat trimmings Can cause pancreatitis.
Fish (raw, canned or cooked) If fed exclusively or in high amounts can result in a thiamine (a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death.
Grapes, raisins and currants Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. There have been no problems associated with grape seed extract.
Hops Unknown compound causes panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, and death.
Human vitamin supplements containing iron Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys.
Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle.
Marijuana Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting, and changes in the heart rate.
Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs and cats may develop diarrhea if given large amounts of dairy products.
Moldy or spoiled food, garbage Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhea and can also affect other organs.
Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death.
Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions.
Persimmons Seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis.
Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract.
Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.
Raw meat May contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Rhubarb leaves Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.
Salt If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances.
String Can become trapped in the digestive system; called a "string foreign body."
Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus.
Table scraps (in large amounts) Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should never be more than 10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed.
Tobacco Contains nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervous systems. Can result in rapid heart beat, collapse, coma, and death.
Yeast dough Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.
Xylitol (artificial sweetener) Can cause very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can result in vomiting, weakness and collapse. In high doses can cause liver failure.

Welcome to why hockey sucks and why I gave up on it years ago. I love a sport where there are only 16 games in the regular season so they all matter and they're all on Sunday to make it easier to watch every single game. To me basketball, baseball and hockey ALL need to cut their regular season in half... as a start. Make it easier for their fans to follow and make it so that the regular season means something and the games are more important.

That's exactly when I gave up. Sounds like they lost lots of fans around the same time. You think they would learn but I guess not.
