LOL I did exactly that. Broke two clips on the drivers side. Lower clips are made up of 2 on right and 2 on left of each mirror. I broke off two, one on each side. But it popped back in very tight. But a good heads up for anyone doing this in the cold.

What was the part number for the heated rear view mirrors? I went to the site, but did not find what I thought would be the parts. Thanks

Going back to original post these are the mirror numbers
Toyota Highlander Mirror Left Part No. 87961-0E070 = $50
Toyota Highlander Mirror Right Part No. 87931-0E080 = $50

Just a heads up, my Dad got his parts yesterday to do this mod. I compared the 2012 Highlander Heated Mirrors to the stock '05-'11 Tacoma Mirrors, and they will be compatible as a direct-fit replacement - meaning you don't have to get the Sienna mirrors and modify/transfer the back-plate.

The shape is slightly different on the Highlander Mirrors though: the top inside corner of the mirror is more of a right-angle than a rounded corner, and the top plane is more straight and not as convex as the Taco mirror. They WILL fit in the '05-'11 housings though, perhaps even better than the OEM mirrors.

I will post pics comparing the 2 in a few days when I install them.

Finally got around to installing mine and wiring them up yesterday.

Of course, the install didn't go as planned though...

My shop was still warming up, I hadn't heated the edges of the plastic on the Sienna mirrors yet, and I was still wearing a light set of gloves so didn't have good 'feel', then SNAP. That's also when I noticed the stiff globs of mastic in there that surely didn't help my situation...

Thankfully, I managed to separate the broken pieces from the heating element using the heat gun to make things a little easier, then was able to glue it to the back of my original mirror using some 3M Super 77 I had on hand and carry on with the install.

Passenger side went fine with liberal use of the heat gun to keep the plastic backer flexible.

After this, I did measure a different impedance from each side, which now leaves me with a the driver-side mirror (the ooops side) that doesn't heat up quite as well as the passenger mirror - must've messed up the element in some way with all of my tugging on it... Oh well, they work! I'll still surf the local wreckers to keep an eye open for another mirror in the meantime...

I ended up not using a relay because 1) it was getting late 2) I was getting lazy and most importantly, 3) I did some quick math. My toggle switch is rated for 10 or 15A (can't remember) but these things weren't even going to draw 1A. I pulled power from one of the rear window circuits using a 5A fuse which is more than sufficient (I don't have rear windows in an access cab, why not use the switched circuit?). I can't recall, but I think we're only actually drawing about .8A, so no worries for the switch. I installed the amber illuminated toggle switch by drilling through and carving out the guts of the blank directly beside the mirror controls.

So there, I'm done for now. Take your time!

I didn't know the Highlander mirrors were even an option until a couple months ago. So, prior to confirming they were a good fit, the Sienna mirrors were the only other choice (aside from Muth mirror kits and motorcycle grips heaters).

That's why the OP was updated to include the Highlander mirrors as an "easier" option.

I can help out, but unfortunately I'm busy this weekend. Maybe we can set something up for next Sunday???

I don't know of any heated areas, I was freezing my ass off the last few days doing some mods myself.

It gets COLD early now, I was working in like 25° weather for a couple hours and it was not fun :(

I can use the AutoCraft Center on Fort Lewis, but it costs like $2.50 an hour...That's probably what I'll end up doing. Next weekend won't work for me, I have to go on a marriage retreat with the wife. I think I can handle it, I just wanted to have someone there that has done it before. Wish me luck lol. Thanks though!!

Good luck man, let me know if you run into any problems or if you have any questions.

I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to wiring and mods so my quick "projects" sometimes turn into hours of tinkering.

    Sweet Ben.

When I checked my buddy's '08 truck, we used a flathead screwdriver and popped and swapped the mirrors. His truck was made in Texas and mine ('12) in Mexico. My concern was the backer plate would be a touch different, but they fit perfectly on one another's truck.

This should save the now needless work of removing the glass from the backerplates of Sienna units.

Edit** Just an FYI, guys with a '12 and up Tacos do not need to purchase the amber bulb for their Highlander timer switch (if using one). The newer Tacos now use green switch/indicator lighting. The Highlander timer switch already has the green bulb installed.... that will save you $5. ;)

I'm researching alternative switches to use on my OEM Heated Mirror Mod thread.

Reason being: for those w/ 09+ TRD OR pckgs, there are no blanks to the left of the steering wheel, so that leaves under the climate control as the only option for blanks (which are a different size). I would like to keep "evolving" this mod to accommodate all the different options and configurations of our trucks.

A lot of people have contributed great info and new ideas, so let's keep it going with addtl. switch options!

I think the switches from the newer ('10-up) 4-Runners are the same size, and may be an option. Has anyone tried any 4-Runner switches? Might be useful for other mods too if you want to keep them as OEM as possible.

Also, I was thinking this might work if someone could help plot out the wiring.

    Ben,
That little switch is awesome, but 1. Is it backlit, and 2. Is it a momentary switch? I guess my real question is, would it work with an aftermarket timer module (auto-shutoff)?

Not sure on the specifics man, I was just searching around for different options when I came across this switch. Couldn't find any info on it, but I believe the "mirror" button is actually for retractable mirrors; so not sure if it would work for the Heated Mirrors or not.

I think you're right about the retractable mirror sail on that switch Ben.

I noticed that all 'heat' indicators printed on buttons/switches for all models of Toyotas have the wavy looking heat shimmer print on them.

An alternative is having a switch in the blank(s) below the HVAC controls. I have my "anytime camera on" switch going in that spot soon.

That's what I'm assuming (about the fold-in mirrors button). I think the 5th Gen 4Runner switches will fit our "Blanks" under the climate controls (see pic below of the 4R switches). I'm wondering the that 'Wiper De-Icer'
switch has a built-in timer like the Highlander Heated mirror switch. OZ-T said his sister has a new 4R, and he will measure the switches to see fi they are the same as our "minis". Still lotsa research to do.
    DSC00204_6a23c1a9f837e4ddd69ec08df7f5badeb057fe2e.jpg

The main reason I started researching this is from a local TW member who contacted me about helping him install his Heated Mirrors. I let him know that we could definitely work something out, and he then told me he has a '13 TRD OR with all the goodies, so he has no empty blanks to the left of the steering wheel. I am researching other switch options that will work for him, and still essentially provide the OEM look/feel (not just a generic SPDT switch, but it may come to that if necessary).

What if you ran the circuit off the AC control panel? The temp select knob just outputs varying voltages for the different settings. Have a circuit that trips the mirror relay when the temp knob is set to max heat.
