Ok..I'll throw my two cents in here.

1 : Gun laws only regulate people who are concerned with the laws. Criminals have no concern for the old laws, much less the new ones.

2 : It doesn't matter what they're trying to limit. It's one more step toward limiting us right out of our guns. It's the same way it's been done for centuries.

3 : Leggo..Gun owners need to stick together . Don't think because you use a shot gun that you're safe from all this. Right now it's "assault rifles" . Then it'll be pistols. Then hunting rifles and shotguns ,until you can't own any of them. Don't get the idea in your head that " Oh,it's only "assault weapons " . Did anyone look at the list of guns on the ban ? Many were sporting semi-auto rifles .

4 : Oz..yes..I believe that I ,as an American , should be able to own whatever weapons that I feel I want . But with that , I believe that this is a right UNTIL I do something to show that I am not capable of using said weapons in a responsible and safe manner. I commit a felony ( including DWI ) and all my gun rights go bye bye. That being said, I would feel safe in saying that most Americans don't have the resources required to be able to own the real serious hardware that the military has.

5 ; If you look at gun crimes you'll find that the majority ( read as better than 90 percent ) are committed by people that can't even legally own a gun.

6 : In multiple studies , gun control laws have been shown to be ineffective in controlling violent crime rates. The crime rate in Australia for example has climbed consistently every year since their gun ban.

7 : If you look at the New York "assault weapons" ban, you'll find that there isn't one...I'll repeat that...NOT ONE...machine gun on that list. Ownership of machine guns in NYS has been illegal since the NFA laws were put into place in the 1930's.

8 : In response to the comment about the Nazi's having AR15's and AK47's.. The Nazi war machine was far ahead of the allies in the development of weapons. Better tanks, better heavy machine guns , and generally better vehicles . The problem that they had wasn't high tech weapons, but a lack of raw materials to make them. The AK47 ( Avtomat Kalashnikova , model 1947 ,was originally designed in 1947,2 years after the end of WWII ) was pretty much a ripoff of the German STG44 that was captured by the Russians and sent back to be reverse engineered. The Germans had an equivalent to our M1 Garand ( the K43 ) . Very similar in firepower and operation. The German heavy machine guns beat our hardware in firepower AND round per minute count . Their tanks were generally better armored and had larger guns .The long and short of it is that had the Germans taken more time and developed more reliable sources of raw materials the outcome of the war may have been VERY different.

Australia has an all out ban on guns ?

and hunting rifles and shotguns are legal here in Canada so I doubt they are going anywhere in the US as some kind of trickle down effect of an "assault" weapon regulation , that seems a bit overblown , no ?

In 1996 newly elected Prime Minister John Howard of Australia pushed for stricter gun control. That year the Australian Parliament passed the National Firearms Agreement which banned the private ownership of all semiautomatic rifles and semiautomatic and pump action shotguns. The new law also established more restrictions in the licensing of other firearms.

Not an all out ban,but a ban on the majority of what they could own in the past.

Since Australia banned semiautomatic rifles, shotguns and pump action shotguns the gun crime rates have skyrocketed throughout the country.
Murders committed with guns increased by 19%.
    Home invasions increased by 21%.
Assaults committed with guns increased by 28%.
Armed robberies skyrocketed with an increase of 69%.

That's called regulation , a ban means no guns at all

These two concepts don't seem to be able to be seperated in discussion of this topic

good article just read it, a good example why a background check and psych exam should be necessary to own a firearm. Although all gun owners should be more responsible for their guns (locked away when not in use, trigger locks, whereabouts of them at all times).

Never had a gun before and never planned on owning one. However, since sandy hook and the threat of gun control, i have bought five weapons, two of which are "assault weapons", not because i needed them, but because im afraid i wont be able to have one in the future. Somehow, i feel more endangered now with this ban than ever before. I feel like if i dont get these weapons, someone else will, and that someone else may do something bad with it.

I already told the last guy that mentioned it... we're full.

I hope they do bring in the psych exams for firearm ownership. I wonder after the test how many TW members will be on here complaining the test was rigged?

Paranoia [ˌpærəˈnɔɪ.ə] (adjective: paranoid [ˈpærə.nɔɪd]) is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself.

So are you saying times have changed regarding all rights (speech, assembly, religion, press, trial, etc) or just those particular rights you might disagree with?

Notice few New Yorkers are objecting very loudly (here or elsewhere) about the new legislation? Let's face it. Gun control is a fact of life in New York and apparently a good number of New Yorkers prefer it that way.

I listen to all this and what comes to mind is the talking points of the NRA you all seem to know all the lines word for word. The NRA does not care about you they could care less they are funded by the gun manufactures there top executive’s make millions by pushing guns and fear. The general public right now by a huge margin supports a change in the way guns are sold there is no one coming to your door to take your guns that would be an impossible task the NRA wants you to believe that however. Our PD does not have 20 round clips yes we have assault rifles only to put us on a level playing field and they are not something that's carried on a regular basis. There was a time we did not even need guns but that’s when people had respect for ones that tried to keep the peace. This contest has been going on for decades. I would suggest you go back in history and read what Ronald Regain had to say and he was a gun/ second rights advocate

Here is a couple of quotes by Ronald Reagan:

"You won't get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There's only one way to get real gun control: Disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you don't actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time... It's a nasty truth, but those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed by gun controllers. I happen to know this from personal experience."

    Another:

"Our nation was built and civilized by men and women who used guns in self-defense and in pursuit of peace. One wonders indeed, if the rising crime rate, isn't due as much as anything to the criminal's instinctive knowledge that the average victim no longer has means of self-protection."

    One more:

There are those in America today who have come to depend absolutely on government for their security. And when government fails they seek to rectify that failure in the form of granting government more power. So, as government has failed to control crime and violence with the means given it by the Constitution, they seek to give it more power at the expense of the Constitution. But in doing so, in their willingness to give up their arms in the name of safety, they are really giving up their protection from what has always been the chief source of despotism -- government."

I'm sure some in the Black Hills and other places may disagree with that.

I see, and others see American history as being founded from the back of a horse by a man with a gun in his hand... from inception to the apex of Manifest Destiny.

OK someone is going to have to enlighten me on the intent of the forum rule about politics.

Exactly why is mentioning a pending law or legislation taboo but one that just got passed is OK to debate away without restrictions???

You're telling me you guys are issued "assault rifles" to put you guys on a level playing field... in Maine???

I like my evil looking semi automatic rifle because it's gnarly as fuck and puts me on a somewhat even playing field with everyone else. More than anything it's pretty harmless sitting in my safe all locked up. Certainly no need to level the playing field with law abiding citizens.

To an extent AR15's are becoming standard issue for police in many places the way the shotgun used to be the extra fire power before. Our local department has a shotgun and AR15 carried in all patrol cars at all times. And I don't by any means live in a violent area.

Yeah I understand that. All the cops here have them. Even the PDs in the upper middle class - lower upper class suburbs of Tucson are all issued them. I guess I just don't like the term level playing field cause it sounds like a war zone, and the people that these measures would affect don't live in war zones. They live in communities where they are productive members of society.
