Just thought I would start a thread since we have an abundance of people here that own guns (which I have no problems with). For me I just dont see any point to one as you would be more likely to die of an accidental gun death than protecting yourself from an intruder. I also have a big German Sheppard and Boxer to protect me :)

Dogs are great protection and alert tools to have around. Knives are faster and much more quiter. I can stick my bowie knife in your gut or leg, ect. before you can load the cartridge. Dogs also make great companions. So there you go! The best of both.

Im just gonna say at the age of 15 i was taught to use a gun, I enjoy my personal shotgun and Im not giving it up. :)

I dont have a dog(yet) and i live in the south, where more or less pretty much everyone down here has a gun to my knowledge.

More power to those who dont though, :D although i can say i've never been anywhere close to shooting anyone other than a clay disk.

Knifes are great for close interaction, but I personally would not want to have to get that close to my assailant, nor would I ask my girlfriend or mother to have to get that close to their attacker.

Accidental gun injuries can be prevented with proper education and interaction with guns.

Im sure once I have children my thoughts will change. Accdients would be my priority, but I dont think I would leave guns out of the household.

Dogs are great alarms but I wouldn't want my guy getting hurt or killed protecting me. I've got a bowie knife next to the bed and a range of other marial arts weapons around the house. I don't kid myself thinking a knife is faster than a bullet though...

Can't tell, never had one and never shoot one either. I think I would be in jail by now if I had one and carried it in my car..:anonymous:

I'm proud to not own a gun. I use my dad's shotgun when I go trap shooting but that's as far as I get into weapons. Big waste of money to me. If I want a challenge, I get out a bow and shoot. Guns have never tickled my pickle and I won't be buying one any time soon.

We have a GSD too as a "first" line of defense. What happens, god forbid, if an intruder kills our dog? Then what will we do? Lay in bed and wait for a gun shot or a baseball bat to the head? Our guns are our last resort.

That's what makes this country great. I can choose to own a gun and you can choose not to. I hope this doesn't change. :)

I've never cared to own one; I don't suppose I'm proud of it per se, but I'm certainly not embarassed by it either. I've got enough responsibility with having a Rottie in the house.

what a great thread. Very insightful comments. This is the kind of discussion I like instead of attacking one another. I do have a baseball bat for protection though. Someone made a point about kids changing your view. While I think that is true, I would be so paranoid they would get ahold of my gun and hurt someone. Another reason why I dont have one is I honestly dont think I could kill someone (I'm sure there are some circumstances where I could). In general if someone breaks into my house im locking myself in my room. They can take everything.

Here come all of the Internet tough guys to mock you.

And yeah, this is the most civil gun "conversation" I've seen/heard in awhile. Just give it time, though. :D

I understand what you mean, though. It almost has confessional undertones to state you don't own a gun in the south for sure...even most of my bleeding heart buddies own one (or fifty).

Just not my thing at all, though.

I don't have a single line of defense in my room if an intruder came in. No knifes, no dog, no pepper spray, nothing. I know it's different in other areas of the country, but Iowa in general is a very safe place and I've never felt unsafe around here.

I'm a 5'7" and I'll be behind a locked door too (crawling out the window, of course).
