Mike, unplug your gauges and they don't record miles driven. I really have 56k, but mine is showing 54 and change

Mileage is stored in the gauge cluster. This is one of my customers gauges in my truck and I don't have 112k

Too much effort and not that much of a decrease in mileage recorded on the ODO

That's surprising! I would have thought the ECU would have told the ODO what to display. So if I swap in a dash that says I have 20k miles on it, as far as anyone knows, they'd think it's a truck with 20k miles on it, it never corrects itself?? Seems way too easy to commit fraud on a trade in or private sale

I did that, doesn't make enough of a difference to say so and I can't clear big enough tires to make a difference

Yep! I have a limited cluster with 5k on it... Lol :D It doesn't correct itself. That's why you have to replace your gauges through Toyota, and when you do so, they look at the ODO and send that to whoever makes the gauges so that it can be programmed at XYZ miles

Good to know... Well, go ahead Deval, do your worst. Sounds like I'll be tracking mileage with an Ultragauge

Mileage has been stored by the cluster gauges in every vehicle I've owned. It was that way in both my Jeeps, and my old GMC. :notsure:

I don't know about other states, but in Maine a vehicle's mileage is recorded every year on the registration, and is then written on the bill of sale when it's sold. When the vehicle is re-registered by the new owner, the VIN is processed to assure the mileage is correct, so fraud isn't really possible.

Or just change the chip that records it..in a way digital is easier to alter.

Not in MA NMW, only when title changes hands is mileage recorded on a document. I "think" they look now on state inspection and log it somehow..not sure where exactly but they must do something because mileage at inspection each year showed on the Carfax when I bought my 2010 Tacoma.

How is fraud not possible?!?! I buy a new vehicle, keep the ODO unplugged for the vast majority of the time, then by year 5 I have a truck that has 100k miles on it and on paper and on the ODO I only have 15k miles on it. Granted, it takes some planning, but it is certainly possible.

They do record the mileage at the annual safety inspection.

This is not true. I sell used gauges all the time. The law just says it needs to be within 5% of the original. However people sending cars overseas don't follow that at all.

I know in Mass inspection they put the mileage down every year as well. If you had a spare cluster to plug in for inspection only it would be the same mileage each year though. BTW as far as I know Chryslers keep the mileage in the ECM, everything else is in the cluster.

Not unless you left one cluster in for 3 months and the other one in the other 9 months.

Right on the recording of it Mike..I meant to say that they don't record it on your reg or title but it does show up on a Carfax..and I think on the paperwork they give you with the sticker come to think of it..

My boss used to pull the odometer on his truck so in 3 years it had 70K and in reality at least 120K..plus he was plowing with them and hauling trailers of landscaping stuff.

Sorry, but that seems completely ridiculous to me. If you're going to get a plate bumper, why get one with the same shitty departure angles of the stock bumper? :notsure:

I get that he was going for a stock-ish look with additional protection (but think he should have color matched cause the flat black looks pretty awful on a gold truck) but if you're going through the trouble and expense, you might as well increase the capabilities of the vehicle.
