Chicken - egg - chicken - egg - chicken - egg...........the arrogant attitudes from implied country resulted in the colorful acurate description above of the implied country's arrogant disrespect of USA. France can look down at their feet but USA is not dirt under their feet like they want to make out so they reap what they sow.

kid living in Latvia rides a bike. turns out he is pretty good and rides all the time.

he and his family work on a farm, barely scraping by, poor as dirt, health issues...etc.

kid becomes local fast guy, goes to races, earns maybe 5 grand a year, tops, because he
cannot place in the classics where the payoffs are huge

he can race a classic maybe once a week if he is lucky, most likely he can race 2 classics
    a month.

so...what can he do ? he starts to boost. now he is:

    a) able to recover and do multiple classics a week
    b) able to increase VOmax to be able to win or be a reliable domestique
    c) now rakes in 200,000 a year, supports whole family

multiply this by 250 people per year in europe and you see the problem facing
    all young racers

This is the harsh reality of it. The person at the top is typically a cheater. Marion Jones, Lance, Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire ....the list goes on and on. And if you don't think that Usain Bolt is on something you're delusional. It wouldn't surprise me if Michael Phelps was on something in addition to weed.

What I'm wondering though is where you draw the line at cheating. Eating nutritious foods isn't cheating. Eating and drinking energy bars and protein shakes isn't cheating. Taking recovery products isn't cheating. All of these things make an athlete better. What (in y'alls opinions) defines that LINE where we consider it to be cheating?

The written rules of the specific sport. They're very specific about what is and isn't allowed. Anything that isn't allowed is cheating. Cheating is never a gray area. It's drawn in very clear black and white terms.

    this ^

if you break the rules knowingly to gain an advantage, by any means

if it's on a list, don't do it. if it is not on a list, have at it.

And now he admits to Oprah that he did use PED's...

Personally, I think he did it to shut everyone up. I am not sure I believe his confession is real. I give the guy full credit.

His confession is 100% real, all right. You can take that to the bank. It opens himself up to tens upon tens of millions of dollars in lawsuits. He has some very carefully calculated reasons for confessing, and we'll find out over the next few years what those reasons are. He wouldn't confess to something he didn't do just to shut anyone up, not with everything that he personally stands to lose after tomorrow night.

I can promise you one thing - Those reasons are entirely self serving and self centered. That's his M.O. I have my ideas about what he's doing, but it'll take a lot of time to see if I'm right.

Yeah my thoughts exactly Jamie, he's looking out for his best interests. The part I can't figure out is what he ultimately will gain....please reveal your theory.

I thought I read somewhere that it doesnt matter what he says now because of Statue of Limitations on his past endorsements have run out. Basically saying he is safe of any past monies being taken back.

It's Oprah, you pay her to have her interview you!!!

I watched a bit of the interview on Opera last night. I thought he came off as an ass, just doing it to get through the motions and wasn't sorry for the ppl that he ruined. He couldn't even remember how many ppl he sued! That's a busy lawyer. Like someone said perviously, I think he has reasons for doing this.

Just my theory - He's positioning himself for ultimate redemption. He's going to allow himself to fall, taking UCI (cycling's primary global governing body) down with him. Although cycling's already in dark, dark times, that will destroy it for a while, possibly costing its place in the Olympics for a round or two. The IOC is already considering dropping it until it appears to have itself straightened out. Being the worst guy during cycling's worst times, he'd be the most knowledgeable guy and might, just might, have some credibility in rehabbing its image and reestablishing a new governing body while spouting all kinds of rhetoric about making it a clean sport, etc. After all of this, Lance is a hero again. It'll take years for any of that to fully shake out.

But that could be a huge stretch. Last night looked like a huge charade to me. He let his guard slip several times, just enough, that I thought left him looking like the same selfish asshole he's always been. He'll never be forgiven if people don't believe he's genuinely remorseful.

As for the statute of limitations - I'm no attorney, but I believe references that you see to that are with regard to sworn testimony he gave in a lawsuit in 2006 in which he denied doping. Now that the statute of limitations has expired on that, he's safe from perjury charges for lying in that testimony. Civil lawsuits are still fair game, I believe. But I could be wrong.

maybe. Who better to help design a drug testing protocol than the one who
knew how to defeat it best ?

It's a theory. Nothing would surprise the cycling world too much at this point. The new performance enhancers will be sneaking small motors in the BB LOL.
