Why not? Police around the world (including Canada) have assault weapons available to them and they're simply facing the exact same dangers posed to any victim of a crime. Given that, why shouldn't those civilians (potential victims) have them as well? After all, the weapons are not exactly the same - the police have fully automatic assault weapons at their disposal, while civilians cannot. For civilians, the benefits of semi-auto assault weapons are ease of handling in enclosed areas (the home, etc), not having to reload in the middle of a firefight with a bad guy(s), and similar.

well that is true as well. takes the average person less than 2 seconds to change a mag. mostly is not going to help or change anything in a mass shooting.

but if you have 3 or 4 guys braking in the house you don’t want to take extra time to change a mag, and the 1.7 seconds could mean life or death when someone is trying to hurt one. Also most the people i know that have a gun in the house for protection don’t have extra mags laying all over the house waiting to reload.

The police have them because civilians have them lol. Sure most crimes statistically arent used by them but more people have them now and you see these mass shootings in which as rare as they are typically are carried out with that kind of weapon. They only have them because of the chance that the criminals have higher powered weapons. Liken I said bin another thread we had a Sheriff deputy killed trying to serve a warrant by a guy with an ak47. Situations like that warrant police needing to have more fire power these days.

On the flip side I'd wonder how many home invasion type scenarios play out either by suspects using them or by a homeowner thwarting such an event with that type of gun as some people would lead you to believe is common thus that is what is needed for home defense. I think the statistics work for both sides of the argument when it comes to those guns. Are most crimes committed with them. Nope. Are they needed most of the time for defense? Nope. Whatever I'm leaving this before it spirals more into a cluster fuck. Its just going in a never ending circle now.

No shit. Why can't people just agree that not everyone shares the same opinion, some people are always going to be arrogant, and not all facts are true facts. Give it up. I thought this thread was to say if you are fine with not owning a gun, not bitch about how joe doesn't know what he's talking about and sam wouldn't trust bob holding a gun and ron fears for his life because he lives in gary, indiana.

That's a bloody silly argument. Why not say for everytime a police officer uses a gun in self-defense, a gun will be used in x number of whatever. Even though to the two are not in any way linked, they could use that same twisted logic to argue for the disarmament of police officers (something criminals would surely love).

Why is it that the discussion of guns or regulation of certain types of guns always gets twisted into " they are gonna ban all guns " ?

For every time a gun in the home is used in a self-defense homicide, a gun will be used in

    • 1.3 unintentional deaths
    • 4.6 criminal homicides
    • 37 suicides22
In 1997 there were 15,690 homicides.

    • Of these, 8,503 were committed with handguns.
    • Among handgun homicides, only 193 (2.3 percent) were classified as justifiable homicides by civilians.23
For every time in 1997 that a civilian used a handgun to kill in self-defense, 43 people lost their lives in handgun homicides alone.24

I always wonder that myself. I still hear people talking about being pissed that the 2nd amendment is being taken away, their guns confiscated, and they can no longer protect their families. Although they have been saying that since Obama was elected the first time. No one is suggesting all guns banned but at least from my personal experience that's the primary thing people are arguing against happening.

So here is the problem with not owning a gun.

On May 8, 1792, Congress passed "[a]n act more effectually to provide for the National Defence, by establishing an Uniform Militia throughout the United States" requiring:
[E]ach and every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years (except as is herein after excepted) shall severally and respectively be enrolled in the militia...[and] every citizen so enrolled and notified, shall, within six months thereafter, provide himself with a good musket or firelock, a sufficient bayonet and belt, two spare flints, and a knapsack, a pouch with a box therein to contain not less than twenty-four cartridges, suited to the bore of his musket or firelock, each cartridge to contain a proper quantity of powder and ball: or with a good rifle, knapsack, shot-pouch and powder-horn, twenty balls suited to the bore of his rifle, and a quarter of a pound of powder; and shall appear, so armed, accoutred and provided, when called out to exercise, or into service, except, that when called out on company days to exercise only, he may appear without a knapsack.

This is different than the Draft during the wars.

As Times have changed so has the militia and so have there weapons.

Probably because most people fear change. When something gets taken away, no matter how small, people feel it's the beginning of the end.
