so I thought about changing my front wheel bearings to fix the 'shimmy' at speeds above 60 , and called up my local toyota. $1300 fuggin dollars is what they quoted me!!!! OMFG!!! seriously?!!! this is a 2WD too!!!

said they 'recommend' changing the hubs is why it costs so much.
the bearings are like $100 each

If I have to I suppose I could just buy the parts and do it myself.
getting them old ones out will probly suck it tho..

Yeah thats why their called the stealership. You would think by buying a Toyota and keeping their company running they would cut you some slack but no, its the total opposite!!!

 

Bearings are an easy change, at least in my experience, just don't overtorque them. Come back a week later and re-torque.

Have no experience with our setups though, thought it was an entire hub assembly.

 

anyone do a write up on this? or in the process of a write up lol

so hubs are like $130 x 2 + $100 bearing x 2 = $460+-
any other parts I need?
I probly wont replace the hub...but Toyota 'recommends' it, just have to inspect it when its off I suppose

then again, I could just ignore it cuz it's not really that bad (yet)

I have 82k miles, how long are these supposed to last?
stock size tires and stock rims have been on it for the life of the truck, so I assume all is normal wear.

do you have a lift? was the "shimmy" due to the lift or was this normal for mileage?

 

hubs and wheel bearings are easy. and why are you going to the stealership? go to a napa or vato-zone.

 

yeah I got a 2"-3" lift, but those vibrations are fixed (pinion angle)
since I bought the truck at 60k miles there has always been this shimmy at 65mph+ not terribly bad, but I notice it.

I'll probly just buy the parts and install myself when it starts bugging me more. I don't usually go to a dealer for repairs, but I wanted a good chuckle. I usually buy my parts from toyota now cuz I get a 20% discount, even if it costs a bit more than napa or w/e I have piece of mind that the parts will be correct.

 

My bearings blew out at 38,000 miles and Toyota warrantied it under the drivetrain warranty. My truck is not stock by any means either. At the time I had the lift, bullbar, winch, etc. They claimed it was due to lack of proper grease. So factory part failure. But they did not replace the whole hub assembly only the bearings. Mine made a horrible noise and you could put your hand on the passenger hub after driving 50 miles(only warm) the driver side hub was another story I lost skin on 2 fingers as a result of that test. So hot I could not believe it.
