Maybe the US government should arm a militia, just like in our history. At 20, everyone can line up and be handed a black powder gun, 1/4 lb of powder and 25 balls

Actually the Supreme Court has never issued a ruling which stated or set any legal basis for "reasonable infringment" of 2 amendments rights.

There have been challenges to individual states laws on state prohibitions and they have been mostly upheld.

HOWEVER, those cases were heard before the precedent setting cases of Heller and McDonald which dealt primarily with "keeping" of firearms.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_v._Heller

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonald_v._Chicago

Now we also recently got a landmark case in regards to "baring" arms in Moore vs Madigan which simply put held that an individual has the right to "bare" or to carry a firearms.

    http://www.examiner.com/article/court-issues-huge-ruling-for-right-to-carry-outside-home

Also remember that the McDonald ruling incorporated the 2A to the states which means essentially that gun rights arent states issues anymore. The vast majority of state laws that prohibit specific guns are an infringement and future cases and ruling will most likely solidfy that.

Yes but then some of those people will use those balls when questioned if they have "balls"

No, Oz. I expect people to be responsible and provide for their own training if needed. Many have obtained that training elsewhere (military, grew up with weapons, etc), so don't need it. Still others are quite capable of teaching themselves (as has been done with weapons for thousands of years).

No need for government to step in now and seek even more control over law-abiding citizens. After all, even drugged-out bad guys seem to handle firearms effectively enough without training. Safety classes for law-abiding citizens surely isn't going to change that.

I just re-read the orginal post and I can assure you if you are strictly talking about any of the guns that I own, the chances are zero when it comes to being injured by an accident involving one of them. That is as long as I am alive and in charge of them.

So i don't see that as a valid argument not to own unless you don't trust yourself with things of a mechanical nature or something. But again, you don't need a reason, it is your personal choice.

Why bother issuing driver's licenses then or pilot's licenses for that matter ?

The classes are informational and don't determine whether or not you can have a fire arm. MA requires that you sit through the safety class so you could say it's government approved. I showed up, they go through the basics of a firearm, how to use them, hold them, etc. You then get your certificate and go apply for your CCW or FID card. Educating people is the right thing to do. Letting someone get their license so they can go buy and gun and figure it out for themselves is downright stupid in my opinion. I have no problem with someone mandating that people sit through a safety course before getting a gun. Worst thing that happens is you waste a few hours if you're already proficient with firearms.

There is never a zero chance of not getting hurt by a weapon unless you keep it locked up and dont look at it.. shit happens and mistakes are made. even if its a .01% chance there is still a chance.

That's is a good point. The OP refers to gun ownership like one would refer to "why do you need 4x4". Don't pull the trigger while looking down the barrel.

X2. I've seen the hole in the wall where an accidental discharge buried itself after a guy who used to say the SAME thing. "I'll never make a mistake". Left that hole in his wall to remind himself.

I would totally agree, that was sarcasm. The Sweeds are forced into having to own a gun. Not just a regular old rifle either. They get a full auto sig 550. Not even close to what US citizens can buy.

I say if you don't want to own a gun more power to you. It is awesome to be an American.. The right to choose whats in you own home is a hell of a freedom. As for the government regulating it.. thats wrong. The day that the US needs to protect it self form an invader foreign or domestic and no one has the ability to protect them selves. will be a sad day.

so you are saying there is a 0% chance of having a gun accident? I would disagree with that

I don't own a gun, right now, for a few reasons:

    1. Watched a good friend's family fall apart after their teenage son used his Dad's pistol to blow his brains out in the bathroom.
    2. Dealt with a suicidal stepson who had his Dad's gun in hand and considered blowing his brains out (teenage hormones are SO much fun to deal with).
    3. Ref above - it's dangerous to have guns within easy, unsupervised reach of young people. I will still have teenagers running in and out my door for the next year or two.
    4. Where I live isn't dangerous but I'm keeping track of the slime in this town to see if they're working my direction like this f'ing waste of skin: http://www.gazette.com/articles/colorado-149809-soldier-months.html
    5. I have an alarm system so there's no sneaking in to my house like the above example.
    6. I've got triggertime behind SAWs and Maw Deuces. After that everything else is a pee shooter :D (yeah opinions will vary on that thought).
    7. Not scared of the gubmint coming into my house. I'm a law abiding citizen. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be able to get the kind of firepower to stop the gubmint from coming into my house.

Still, I might get myself a pistol in a couple years.

I would disagree with the fact that you are disagreeing with me  You have a gun in the house there is a chance to have an accident with it (even if it is a small chance) Im confused, maybe because I don't believe in absolute zero?

And if you panic and are fumbling for your gun in an emergency situation.. Adrenaline taking over not in complete control.. Still see a zero percent chance of nothing going wrong?
