4X4 q??

OK, I was told that I could put my truck in and out of 4 wheel drive while I was driving as long as it wasn't 65 mph or faster. It goes into 4 wheel drive just fine but when I take it OUT of 4wheel drive there is a very very loud clunk!! Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?!

 

Nope...Just the gears releasing under a bit of load.

 

The speed for engaging is 60 mph max, to disengage though, there is no speed limit. I don't know bud about this noise, mine is not doing that. Maybe try not to give it too much/not enough gas (load) when you do it (engage/disengage), trying to keep the rev of the engine as much as possible synchronized with the drivetrain.

 

Mine clunks when taking it out... thinking about it now, I would just assume its because the engine is doing a 'braking' action because my foot is off the gas.

 

Am I suppose to take my foot off the gas?

 

You can't turn it on, on the pavement???

 

You can but you will need a new 4wd system pretty soon.

 

Clunk is normal, mines been loud since day one and i use it alot, its just the sound of it disengaging, yeah dont use it on pavement, not very good for it

 

No dry hard surface. You'll cause drive drive line bind and eventually have to replace your transfer case.

The clunk becomes less and less the more you use it. I've found it hasn't gone away, but it no longer sounds like I just left a piece of my transmission behind anymore.

And everyone else can shutup about my tranny. I'll boner punch you!

if you have a standard transmission, I suggest pushing the clutch in, then shiwching to 2WD and releasing the clutch. just to let things loosen up.

 

i have noticed the clunk sound doesnt happen when i take my foot off the gas and not be in a turn when engaging or disengaging 4wheel drive.

 

Who are we to question your lifestyle choice?

 

Mine is quiet and smooth as silk when I engage and disengage 4WD. But I do it gently, not under load, and not at high speeds (typically less than 20 mph because I'm on a back road at the time).
