Not related to those more recent post in this thread but, in context with the thread and OPs first post.

The Federalist Papers, while not binding, sure indicate the mind set of those who wrote the Bill of Rights. Hamiltons 28 & 29 as well as Madisons 46 seem to imply the intent as "shall not be infringed" in a simple literal meaning of "shall not be infringed" for the reason of defending the population or citizens (in some if not all cases) againts our own government if and as needed.

In light of my strong fundamental belief in the Constitution, Bill of Rights & following amendments (as a U.S. citizen) I would not be proud of NOT owning a gun and in fact I am willing to do so as a matter of duty should the need to use it arise.

That being said & IMO, "shall not be infringed" also means a citizen is not required to own a fire arm so I don't look down on or attack those who decide not to own a gun so long as they don't want to violate my rights to do so.

I'm not sure how ANYONE (of normal or higher I.Q.) can argue the intent of the second amendment. If change is what is wanted, an amendment (which, as if it would matter, I would not support) is the method that should be used, IMO.

Lots of "normal and higher I.Q." people argue the intent of the 2nd amendment.

The founding fathers were very smart men. They were very educated men and they had an enormous amount of knowledge about the history of the world and of nature of man.

The founding fathers knew that when governments are run by men, that man unchecked will march headlong towards power and complete power.

The founding fathers knew that only a goverment that feared its citizens would abide by the citizens wishes. To be a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Government does not fear a disarmed citizenry.

The founding fathers could have written a Bill of Rights that said "for the self defense of ones home and the need to provide food, the right of the people to own certain guns for certain conditions".

The founding fathers could have written a Constitution that granted the federal government complete control over the reglation of arms.

They didnt. The could have and they didnt.

They didnt write the Constitution over night and they didnt write the Bill of Rights over night. They were well thought out and deliberate.

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
The second amendment is about defense from foreign powers, corrupt government, and common criminals. Is is, in it's most basic form, the right to self defense. My right to self defense is meaningless if I am denied the tools necessary for the job. My opinion alone is the one that matters when it comes to selecting the best tools for that job because it is my life and liberty that hang in the balance. I alone am responsible for my safety and welfare and the best way to do that is to carry the appropriate tools. I will not tolerate politicians or bureaucrats deciding for me what I need or do not need.

Bad people do bad things. They take advantage of the liberties that we as citizens of a free nation possess to do harm to their fellows, but they alone are accountable for their actions. No law will restrain them. The only thing that can stop them is a free and armed citizen willing to take a stand when threatened. More laws only serve to prosecute them after the deed is done, they will do nothing to prevent murder. If they did the prohibition of murder alone would be sufficient.

A free man may defend himself. It is equally true that he may choose not to. You may choose for yourself, buy you may not do the same for me.

I dont think the intent is to stop all people from owing guns, just trying to control them more. The ATF has enough laws they could enforce but the NRA has gutted the ATF and their abilty to enforce the laws.

I dont feel proud not to own a gun, I just dont feel I need to be any closer to a Darwin award then I already am.

Lots of people argue and do nothing to show "normal and higher I.Q." when they fail to understand the words "shall not be infringed". It's pretty clear (and easy) to even a total and complete dumb ass like myself.

And by control them, you mean control people? Because that's about what it boils down to.
