I wouldn't say I'm proud not to own a gun, but not ashamed either. I was thinking about getting a concealed carry permit just because I could but with my work situation at the time I would always have to leave it at home, 3 hours away. So that seemed pointless.

And now work has changed and I am home much more, I have friends over and there's always alcohol. I've personally seen why guns and alcohol are a bad idea together so I decided I'd rather not have a gun around. I realize someone could break in or whatever, but the chances of it happening are pretty remote, it's really not something I worry about outside of locking the doors. I'm just not especially worried about it.

Interesting thread here on different ideas about owning and not owning a gun. I have taken a sworn oath to defend and protect the constitution of the US, against all enemies, both foreign and domestic in my line of work. I respect all of your posts and find some of them which I agree with, and some that are just damn hilarious.
I will offer my two cents here, and say that a gun is the greatest equalizer on the playing field. It is the only thing that evens the odds against people who prey on the sick, weak and the elderly.
Dogs are great at warning us of something wrong, but we can't always take them with us for protection or an early warning signal.
What we can take with us is a good ole fashion snub nosed .357 that will deliver one hell of a boom and an amazing ass kicking on multiple levels against the types of predators who prey on the unsuspecting, the sick, the weak and the elderly.
Unfortunately, where I live, I can't get a concealed weapons permit, but if I could, I'd trade my pocket knife in for a trusty good ole fashion revolver.
