good post. i agree dogs are great at warning us about our surroundings. even the little dog like pugs and stuff. we have a pug, and she parks any time i even walk in the door really fast. or if the ups guy comes. but no way in hell she could protect me or anyone. unless you have a big dog it’s not help for protection.

and I also carry a knife every where i go.(other than like the court house of some where) but I would much rather have a gun, it is much more effective than a knife and i don’t have to get so close to someone. I will be getting my hand gun carry permit and i will still carry a knife, i find my self using it all the time to open stuff or so what ever.

I have guns for various reasons ( hunting, recreational shooting, defense, inheritance ) and understand the responsibility that goes along with that. I don't think it makes me some big tough guy. I will inform someone if I intend to enter their home when I am carrying, and make sure they're ok with it. As far as having kids goes, it didn't change my view one bit. I was raised around guns, and knew how to use them, chandle them and clean them at an early age ( think 8 or so ). I keep the ones I have now locked up , although the ones my dad had were just leaned up in the corner of the closet in my parents' bedroom.

To those of you who are proud to not own a gun,I post this for thought. There are many gun owners out there who once felt as you did, until they were robbed, attacked, raped or beaten . While police are out there to help protect us,they are a reactionary force by nature. They can't do much until after something has happened, unless they by luck go by while it's happening . I prefer to take my own well being as well as those I care for and the general public around me under my own control ( in as much as I can in a self defense situation ). My $.02...

2 of my favorite gun quotes.

When seconds count the police are only minutes away.

I carry a gun because a policeman won't fit in my pocket.

Reminds of a woman here in CO, in my county, on my shift, that had her door kicked in out in the middle of nowhere, and the burglar came through the door and ended up face to face with the barrel of a 357...

Lady didn't really know how to use it, or make it safe but she knew where it was, and she knew how to protect her baby and herself with it.

I'll be damned if some of these people think that something will never happen to them...because it will. And they will call on police to come protect them, because they were proud non gun owners.

This is like saying, "I'm proud that I don't have the capability to defend my home and my loved ones against an armed attacker."

Ignorance is the new common sense.

My mom does not know how to safely handle a gun, she does not know how to make it safe either! She told dad she wanted a small gun to shoot someone if they broke in. Dad said no you need a lot more practice and and get more familiar with a gun. She knows how to point and shoot but can’t hit a paper target very well, and she also made the comment that she wants to go pew pew pew like in the movies. I could not help but laugh a little and literally  me and dad wont let her handle any gun without us around. She is fine with own guns and everything. But a lot of the time when we go shoot she does not want to go and stuff.

I agree i think a lot of people that don’t own guns have just never had anything bad happen too them! and don’t realize how great of a tool it is for protecting your self and your loved ones and the anyone you care about. They also think police are all ways there to protect them. But they can’t protect you until you make to call 911, and by than you may have already ben beaten and rapped or maybe even dead.

These comments say i’ll use a knife i can use it faster Are stupid IMHO. Why would you want to get hands on with someone that is trying to hurt YOU? I personally would want to stop someone that is coming at me and trying to hurt me, a good 20 or 30 feet before he even gets to me. Now i know he maybe closer but i would still want to stop him or her as far away from me as posable wether it be 10’ or 30’.

I am Canadian country boy. I grew up as a member of the local Dominion Marksman Junior Rifle Club and I am ex military police. I am now long retired and a "snowbird", spending 6 months stateside every year. I have to say the NRA type position for "the unrestricted right to bear arms" has always bothered me.

I can totally understand firearms for hunting or target shooting or even home protection if you must, but feel that the need for magazines with capacities over 10 rounds is totally uncalled for and unnecessary. If you can't hit your target(s) with 10 shots you shouldn't own a gun of any kind.

In any event, hand guns are far more use for home protection, as using a rifle inside a home, even a short barrel AK or the like, is awkward and as likely to do damage to the occupants as any intruder.

IMHO the USA will be a far safer place foe everyone without mega magazines for rifles of any kind.

nice 1st post! and we have had a ban in that past that limited hand guns and rifles too 10 rounds and had several big shootings. LA bank robbery is one, they got all the stuff from Mexico tho. The columbine school shooting is another, both had many many people get hurt, the LA bank robbery only 2 people died i think and they both were the bad guys. I for get how many got hurt and died in the Columbine school shooting. Also i think most these shoots all happen in “gun free zones” like schools, banks. I think the movie theater shooting last summer was a gun free movie theater.

The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting, sport shooting, or protecting your family from intruders.

And I just want to say...

An "assault rifle" as defined by the US military is a rifle with select fire, semi-burst, or full auto capable fire control.

Any weapon that has burst fire, or is fully auto is already regulated and illegal to own by civilians per the 1934 National Firearms Act. So "assault Rifles" are already ILLEGAL!!! Its a true testament to our Federal Government's, and our news media's ignorance.

This whole Assault weapons ban thing is a joke. A JOKE. The first one accomplished nothing, and if passed again, wont accomplish anything again. The first AWB defined "assualt weapons" based on their appearance, not on their function.

It is completely asinine to ban a weapon that is used in less than 2% of violent crimes involving a firearm.

Gun violence needs to be addressed at the root of the issue, not a band-aid solution to make all the clueless, uninformed lemmings sitting in their living rooms feel safe because dangerous looking rifles are illegal for manufacture. (because there are already MILLIONS in circulation in this country).

Another thing to consider is the potential job loss with an "assault rifle" ban. Most, if not almost all tactical rifles are made in the USA, and there are hundreds of companies that employ Americans that manufacture parts and accessories for these rifles. There will be hundreds of thousands of jobs lost, and these are all well paying, all American jobs.
