I was just thinking of Raammatting (nice word, eh?) the interior of the cubby to seal it up. Making a exact match of the lid out of MDF, securing that MDF to the existing lip and recessing an 8" in that MDF piece. And filling the space with PolyFill or the likes.

My only question is how do you seal up the slot that the seat belt runs through, and still have the seat belt function?

Hence, I'm very curious about your project.

 

That's what I was thinking. But that volume of space I have no clue the size. Each sub has precise specs for volume of space it needs.

 

Just FYI - You can fit 2 8" subs in that area! I'll get ya a pic later!

 

I spoke with Rick at Raamaudio for a long time (a lot longer than he probably wanted ) and he has a 1996 ext cab that he wins competitions with.

When talking to him he recommended a few 8s and 10s that would work well in that cubby. The two preferred subs are both Arc Audios, their 8 and 10.

Yes this! Thus the reason I went to a type S 10 it only needs half a cubic foot which is what my interior volume is but I will add some polygon to it as well. If Idid it all again I'd use an 8" sub

 

8s would be ideal in our trucks. 10s are more then enough to beat it up if you just want to blast. 12s sound like crap anyways..

 

I have two JL 12s in a ported box in my xtra cab it doesnt sound like crap....i have good mids an highs which is why but i had these in my previous vehice which is why i have them..i would do one ten in a ported closure in the middle of the back if an xtra cab!

 

Yea I wish I'd gone with an 8 but o well. Could still do it but I'll see how this pans out for now

 

Im kinda an audiophile..so to me 12s sound bad. They aren't tight, really loose and fluby sounding to me.

8'' subs provide the best sound. 10s are a good in between. I have two Alpine Type Xs 10''. But now i wouldn't mind just one nice 8.

Yep nothing wrong with it. Alot of personal preference too.

 

Yeah exactly I agree with you and if I woulda bought sub specifically for this truck i woulda gone with a couple 8s on the floor or where the cubbys are, trying to sell my current speakers to just up grade the mids and put 8 inch subs in the rear panels cause as big as my box is i cant sit like i want to and barely have a 1/4 of the back...barely fit my gym bag back there

 

I got a 10inch JL sub in a JL audio stealth box for my 02 tacoma ext cab. I highly recommend this box for all first gen tacoma's and I think they have one for DC's too. Also the sound is great for everything, with of course a little tweaking of your deck.

Ok so I have these lights
That don't fit behind my grille. My question is should I sell them for $50 and get some ones that will fit? Or should I buy some other ones that will fit behind my grille and just keep these in case? So basically does an extra set of off road lights laying around come in handy??

After the wood frame, start laying glass down to form the base of the box. No pics of that but kinda self explanatory.

Then make the top plate, I made the original sub flush mount like so..


Then let it set up and peel it out and
You get this! Edit: so you guys don't critique me... You also add a shit ton more layers of mat and resin. Think I did 6. Plenty enough for he little bit of power i planned to run to the sub

Then I started laying bedliner down.


That's pretty much it, just put all your plastic pieces back in and your good to go

 

Holy crap... I do not have the testicular fortitude to cut the floor/shelf pan like that.

That's a great install though.

I will have to fab something up that will allow me to seal the cubby up while allowing the seat belt to operate.

& really in the end all you lose is that cubby space.. But you could always just leave the hole open and make a door for it to turn it back into a cubby down the road if you didn't like it. The metal gets mated onto the box and it all pretty much looks factory other than the fact that there's a sub there now.

Great box. Too pricey though. I'm gonna try and build something similar tho.

The seat belt will still work. You can see the slot over to the left where it comes out.

I'd never let anyone sit on the sub though anyways.
