I am sorry, but you are woefully incorrect.

The modern Second Amendment was established by the Supreme Court of the United States in the D.C. v. Heller (2008) case. Please read the link provided and educate yourself. :D

The Heller court established that: "The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home."

There is no "modern" second amendment and the supreme court didnt "establish" the second amendment.

The Heller case dealt with a specific case in a specific federal jurisdiction.

The opinion was narrow in scope.

In no way, shape or form did the court exlude any lawful purposes for the amendment.

Please refer to the follow up cases of McDonald vs Chicago and also Moore vs Madigan.

great pic silas, thats going on FB

Its quite frustrating the level of ignorance some of our representatives have on this issue. Watching the news a little while ago a rep from my state I believe was drafting an assault weapons ban that was supposed to "take the most dangerous assault weapons off the streets", but guess what, none of the guns that have the highest % of use in violent crimes were even on the list! What a crock of absolute shit!

Does that mean only "self defense within the home" or are they just using that as an example?

Normally whenever I have said "such as" I was just giving an example or two and that statement was not fully inclusive.

Just my $0.02. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin (NHTSA) and the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) the leading cause of death in children is vehicle accidents making up 34% of deaths in children yearly. Compare that to firearms making up only 1.5%. I guess my point is for those who say that it is too scary or unsafe to have a firearm in the same house as children should do some research. Turns out your child is much more likely to be killed while in the back seat of your car then they are to be killed in a firearm accident. Something to concider anyway...

About 1% of all gun crime is caused by assault weapons.

IMO the problem isn't the guns themselves in the same house it's their moron untrained parents who are to blame which is why I always argue their should be required training/education needed. I think the differences lies in the fact that often times far accidents are unavoidable but many accidental shootings could be avoided if some people had half a brain and a shred of common sense.

I need one because I already have every other type of firearm.

My collection wouldnt be complete unless I have an AR platform rifle. Actually, I think I need 2-3 different AR's :)

Unfortunately I didnt buy before the panic rush so now I have to wait maybe a year to get one :(

It really is ironic and funny how this whole situation is playing out. Obama wants to instill a ban on assault rifles, so the public gets scared and goes out to buy all the assault rifles, mags, and ammo they can, effectively having the opposite effect obama is trying to get from this bill. Are they really blind to the public's out cry against this new proposal?

Couldn't agree more. It is also my opinion that some people shouldn't be allowed to own a gun period... Let's face it... Some people just want to watch the world burn. You can properly train a lunatic to handle a gun safely, but that's no guarantee he will use it responsibly. At least implement a beefed up screening process so not just any moron/psycho can acquire a firearm. Safe, sane, law abiding citizens shouldn't have to worry about acquiring guns.

SHOULD BE: Guns for some... miniature American flags for everyone else!
INSTEAD OF: "Potentially dangerous"? Relax, that just limits you to three handguns or less. :D

Some of this discussion about the 2nd Amendment is silly. I understand that the supreme court has established that it is legal to use guns for such purposes as hunting, sport shooting, self defense, etc... However, these things are not what the founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the second amendment. Using a gun for hunting or self defense in 1791 was a given. At that time a gun was analagous to a tool that was used for hunting and self defense - just as a shovel is a tool used for digging holes. In most places in 1791 America - a gun was a necessary tool for survival. One of the main reasons the founding fathers included the 2nd Amendment was to deter tyrannical government. Alexander Hamilton wrote the following in 1788 - "If circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens." Make no mistake - this is why the 2nd Amendment was added to the Constitution. I'm not a gun nut - I have a shotgun and a rifle that I used to hunt with (haven't done so in years) - but I don't even own a handgun or an assault rifle. I do not believe we need to overthrow the government - nor am I some sort of survivalist that believes some sort of aramaggedon is rapidly approaching. But the founding fathers wrote the constitution and its amendments for a reason - they lived through things we have not. Many Americans have perished to ensure that the rights secured for us by the founding fathers remain intact today. We should not be so willing to give up rights that we have had for so long - and that have been secured at so high a price. I'll end with a quote from Patrick Henry who said the following while arguing for the right to bear arms as a means to resist oppression in 1788 - "Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined."

I was raised (and still am) Quaker. We are pretty pacifist and most members really do not like guns. My parents, and especially my dad, really really dont like them, but I've been shooting a few times. I might get a shotgun later in life, no need as I am still in college right now.
I don't think I will ever NEED one.. (hopefully) but I do enjoy skeet shooting and will end up probably getting one. I used to be proud not to have one, but then I tried it and enjoy it.
