Local dealer tried to tell me the base model has a different wiring harness and I'd have to change it and the motor to put this in. Thanks for the info!

The only wiring differances I know of are ones with the tow package or something where they have the 7 pin plug vs the 4 flat plug. I think most other things are all wired the same and are still there, whether used or not, such as fog lights. Mine doesnt have them, but it is still there on the frame with a zip tie.

Not quite. My 2008 does not have locking bed compartments. Maybe on the TRD or something. My base model does mnot have them. I wish it did though, because I cant get the things to stay on. The knobs always vibrate loose and the doors end up sliding around in my bed along with whatever was in them.

Oh no... there are some very big differences in the wiring harnesses among different models, particularly the Regular Cab Base model that I'm surprised comes with doors.

But for the intermittent wiper, all of the differences are in the wiper stalk and the mod will work on ANY 2nd Gen Tacoma.

Cruise control may or may not work. California-produced trucks seem to have everything in place, but a lot of the Mexican trucks are missing a wire that ties the ECU to the connector in the column.

I was referring to the compartments themselves.

NONE of the 2nd Gen covers lock from the factory. The lock was the mod done by the guy I replied to, thus, the name of this thread "Cheap/free mods"
He commented that the 2010 and later have the compartments, I clarified that all 2005 and newer have them.

    Ah, gotchya. Misunderstood the statement.

Is there any way to know or anybody that may know about the CC? That will be my next upgrade. Just did the wiper stank from slatercat. I have the 08 base access cab. I understood that it would just be another swap and go with a piece of steering column trim with the hole. OF course it would have the extra hook up for the clutch disconnect that I hear is a minor pain to do.

Mine is an automatic, so the clutch disconnect was not involved.

You have an '08, so there's a good chance that you're good to go. The transition to Mexican production happened in 2008. Your door label should tell whether it was made in Mexico or CA.

Now, it doesn't seem that ALL Mexican trucks are lacking the wire. There have been some reports, but it hasn't been a widespread issue.
If you are lacking the wire, the "Cruise" light will not come on when the button is depressed. The cruise control installation thread either here or on TN describes the procedure to make the connection. ECU is behind the glove box and the other end connects at the base of the steering column.

Where do you press to get the front tabs free on the tacoma plastic casing on the steering wheel shaft? One contributor says you need to start there but didn't say how to do it. Thanks! Frankie from VA

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
No priming or sanding needed? Just painted right over the chrome? What about the rear bumper...? I'm not a fan of the bedliner spray on jobs I've seen, mainly due to the texturing it leaves.

Sanding and priming might make it last longer. As for the rear bumper, well that's actual chromed metal not plastic so I don't think Krylon plastic paint would be your best choice. A lot of people do plastidip I think since they can take it off it they don't like it.

Uh no! Sorry but as with any painting job proper prep is necessary! IE sand lightly and prime, especially over chrome. That is if you want it to last. I'm thinking of painting my bumper. I painstakenly did my sliders. Solvent wash / sand / more solvent / two coats of primer then 3 coats of flat black (holding up very well). Maybe same for rear bumper minus the solvent. Any good pics of black rear bumper? or anyone selling a pyrite bumper in so cal? I'm going for the Off Road - Sport look! LOL

I just did this install today on my 2013 crew cab, using the below instructions. Took me longer to pick up and pay for the part, than it did to install it. Seriously, it's that easy - even though the service guy will give you 100 reasons why it won't work.

The current part# for the 2012-2013 model intermittent wiper stalk is: 84652-02710. That's the part I used. Works great.

The only two things I can add to Roland's excellent post below are:

    1. Be careful when re-assembling the upper and lower housing. There are tiny little tips molded in at key points to make everything line up correctly. It is very easy to damage them or press them out of place if you are rough with it.

    2. Don't bother with the beer - you won't get two sips before you're finished, it's that easy!

    Mick

Maybe go to some fine whiskey then.... :notsure:? Working on the truck is like grilling. It just aint right without an adult beverage.
