    I've got a 3.4 manual 4runner, and my 2.7 manual Tacoma.
Tacoma is 6" lift and 35's
    4runner is 2.5" lift and 34's.

I get 15-20 in the tacoma depending on city or highway and time of year(around 15 around town winter, 18 around town summer)
My 4runner stock got consistently 19-22.5 and lifted it now gets 15-19. Around town gets about 15 and highway 18-19. Pretty comparable to the tacoma, but better power. I'd just get a 3.4 unless you intend on keeping it entirely stock then the 4 banger probably has an advantage.

I get about 20mpg in the city and 22 on the highway.

    That's with a 2002 3.4L X-Cab 5 speed

If I could do it again, i'd choose the same thing.

Thanks for the Infor guys. Do you know how many miles to a tank your getting. On my 2010 v6 I'm getting only 210 to 235 on a tank. I would like to get at least 290 to 300.

Just get on Fuelly and open two windows. One with 4cyl and one with 6. Look at the differences people get and decide what its worth to ya

wow you are only getting 235 to a tank thats about 13mpg!!! That sucks, ive never goten less than 20 in any of my toyotas. Go with the v6 ive had all 3 engines and towed with them and the 2.7 is a slug. Its a great engine but struggles when towing!

list of the toyotas ive had with mpg
    03 taco v6 4x4 5 speed 21mpg
    98 taco 2.7l 4x4 5 speed 21mpg
    02 taco v6 auto 4x4 20mpg
    11 taco v6 auto 4x4 21mpg
    06 4runner v6 auto 21 mpg

With the 4.0 engine you should be getting 365ish miles to a tank
and with the 3.4 and 2.7 if i remember right you will get 340ish

Of course all my trucks were all stock, and I don't "get on the gas" all that much.

Yeah Im getting about 13 to maybe 14 at times and Idk why:confused:. I dont drive fast anymore and really drive like theres a egg under my foot lol.

Thanks for all the infor. That really helped me alot. I surprised your getting really good mpg with all these trucks and suv.I wanted a 03 to 04 2.7 auto cause my friend has one and he loves it and says the power is ok, but then again I have a boat i wanna tow and have an atv that I wanna put in the back of my bed so Idk if its just simpler to just get the v6. Decisons decisons  lol. If the mpg isn't a big difference between the 2 engines then i might just be better getting the v6 and calling it a day you know

Yea getting the v6 is a good decision and if you keep stock tires (i know its kinda boring) you will will get great mpg! I did the deck plate mod and are pro dry s filter to all my 1st gens and that also helped with mpg. I would get better my 1 mpg but the numbers i listed are realistic and plenty of guys around here get 20ish with both engines.

Ive been searching all over and cant seem to find an acurate account of what size tank an 01 trd 4x4 has. I have been getting about 200-250 ( if im lucky) a tank and that just doesnt seem right. I know the best way to gauge gas mileage isnt by tank size but by miles traveled and gallons pumped. Does this seem accurate?

I do warm it up in the morning for 5-10 mins or less and in the evening I am sitting in stop and go traffic for about 20-30 mins.

Any suggestions on what may be going on engine/performance wise or how to improve mpg.

    Thanks

According to my all time fuelly stats:

    81 fill ups tracked
    1093.3 gallons consumed

That's an average of 13.49 gallons per fill up

My all time average per fill up is 286.1 miles

The most I ever went was 350.3 miles on a tank (15.3 gallons)

Start tracking your fill ups on fuelly.com

That way when you start to do things to the truck you can track performance/economy

It's good question to ask here and get answers, but on fuelly.com you can also search for '01s with your same spec and see what they're getting.

EDIT: here's all the 2001 V6s on fuelly. I couldn't filter it down to 4x4 or automatic transmissions, but this should give you a decent baseline

Thats not bad. The 350 on a tank is really good. If I was getting that everytime, I would be so happy:D. Thanks

Ok so thats stating an average is 18/19, which would be approx 280 if the 01 has a 16 gal tank. ( tank size being unkown ) So I am NO WHERE near that basically 50-80 miles less. Something is not right. But like you said Im going to use Fuelly and start tracking whats happening and see if improvements can come.

Next week i am having the trans serviced and i have been thinking about installing an AEM today.

So I guess now its just a wait and see game
