ok so i'll be honest. i saw a thread the other day about something like this someone made for themselves and it got me to thinking. i have the capabilites of doing this in numbers if there is enough interest.

what i am looking for is how many people would honestly order a set of these mounts. they would slide into the factory bed rails and allow you to bolt something to them. the uses are endless, could be used for mounting hi lifts, bed bars, heck anything you can think of that you would want to bolt to the bed rails.

its a simple design that would give you three tapped holes that accept a standard 3/8" bolt. i decided that three holes would be idea as it gives you a variety of mounting options, either using just the center hole, or using the two outer holes. it would be 2" long and machined to fit the channel of the bed rail. they would be made out of aluminum so no need to paint and no fear of rusting. the catch is that it requires enough machining that small quantities are economical. i would need atleast 25 people wanting to purchase a set (two mounts). they slide through the bed rail so you can position them anywhere you'd like. as of right now its just a design i have saved in cad so i dont actually have any pictures of them.

so basically i am looking to see how many people would be interested and how much you would be willing to pay for such a thing.

no.. these would act as a "nut" inside the factory bed rail... thus allowing you to bolt something to the face of the bed rail. but they would be machined so that once the bolt is loosened they would slide freely inside the rail allowing you to move them back and forth. basically you could use them as the "nut" to bolt on things such as a cb antenna bracket, or put a tab off it to mount a hi lift jack, maybe a bracket to mount a light off of... ect.

i've been trying to get my cad program to let me save a picture of it in 3D but its not cooperating right now.

I made my own.1" flat bar drilled & tapped,4" long with 2 3/8" tapped holes.I just bought a 3' stick @ Lowes & made some different lengths. You can make them to fit your needs, simple if you got a drill, some good bits & taps. You can cut lengths w/ a hacksaw w/a good blade or as I did with a air powered die grinder w/cutoff disc.

Yeah. You have to drill your hole to a certain size for a certain tap.

They're pretty easy to use as long as your hole is good to start with.

t&b already make them they are called spring nuts. they are cheap like borscht. they come in 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2", although the 1/2 one is pretty thick.

the pic gives a decent idea of shape, they are about 1 1/2" long by 1" wide, and the 1/4" one is about 3/8" thick, the would have to be modified to fit, but very little would be necessary. the spring keeps them fairly tight against the front of the channel, so they don't move around while you bolt them up.

what do you want to know? they are pretty simple things. I'll run to the shop tomorrow and grab a couple to show off. you can purchase them at pretty much any electrical wholesaler.

How thick are they? Wide? Are they all the same base size with just different hole/thread sizes? I have seen a lot of stuff, but this is the first I have ever seen of these - what applications are they more typically used in?

OK, these are basically a more complex version of stamped spring nuts.....here are some with bolts in them......they are called "Unistrut Spring Nuts" and appear to be designed to slide into some type of metal flange used in the electrical trade.
    http://store.eberliron.com/products/unistrut_parts/unistrut_stud_nuts

Seems like these would work nicely if the base was thin enough to slide into the bedrail accessory channel.

And here are the channels they are designed to fit into. If you can find a channel the same size as the one in the bed, they have Spring Nuts on this site to fit it perfectly:
