I went outside this morning at about 9am and saw this dirt between my driveway and my back yard. I cant figure out how it could have possibly gotten there.

I know it wasnt there at 10:30 pm last night.

I live in a Los Angeles suburb and I live alone. No one has come over and no one should be in my back yard.

There are very few animals around here.

    Nothing seems to be missing.

    I find this very strange.

I have an indoor cat that never goes outside.

    Its not poop.

I did wonder if my neighboors threw it over but it could have only come from one neighboor and I am on good terms with them (or so I think)

Nothing in my back yard seems disturbed or removed.

I'm assuming it's potential burglars who tracked dirt going to your back door to see if it was unlocked. They were probably going door to door checking and walked through a dirtier yard.

Maybe Wells Fargo is using this as a warning to not mess with them in the future.

This is a job for scooby doo.. Or the ghost busters. You never know..
In all seriousness, your concrete is decaying. So the dirt underneath is coming up through cracks, because underneath, the dirt is boiling hot, and it has to go somewhere..
    Don't listen to me.

My first thought is that it looks like soot from your neighbor's woodstove. Was it windy last night?
