Need your advice for railing

OK, so I have a little predicament. I have a split level house where you walk into both sets of stairs. When I moved in, the house had a set of railings... but it does not fit the look of the house. It also was on the stairs itself and I do not like it. Here it was before I removed the actual railings.


Now, I have had some friends come over and look at it to find a way to add railings. None of them can figure it out yet how to make it work. Here is the area I am working with... anyone think they can help me with ideas? I am just looking to make some railings that fit up and down both flights together. I'm not wanting them on the actual stair like they used to be.

 

What kind of railing system / look do you want and what is your budget ?

 

build wall straight up

 

Budget is whatever. And Erica wouldn't mind wood railings with metal spindles. Not looking to build a wall on the whole thing since it would make moving anything in/out a nightmare.

 

Well if a wall is out and the budget is " whatever " , I would go 12mm tempered glass in glass clips

 

And on another note, I would tear out the walls that are up there and put metal railing all the way around but I don't have any more wood flooring to make it fit correctly.

 

Glass as well would take up too much area.

How would I go about mounting it to the side of the stairs? Could I remove the side of the stairs as it stands and put a decorative 2/6" or something along it and mount the spindles to it?

 

Mount some kind of newel to the side of the skirt board , top and bottom rails , glass in clips in between

I'll have to look into it. I guess I do have somewhat of a budget, since I don't want to tear the stairs out and start over again.

 

The glass and clips would probably be a couple grand , I'm not sure on pricing down there though , but Boyd would

And the stair used to be terminated on the inside of the stair. But they had the part of the carpet cut out to fit it in. I could do that on the outside, and it would help me fix my slight fuck up on the flooring.

I wouldn't take that wall out I don't think. But I need to find a way to anchor it into that wall. It has 2 2x4"s inside that part of the wall.

No " graspable " , continuous handrail , no secondary means of support ( frame ) if the glass blows

 

I figured the graspable handrail, that's pretty hit or miss down here on interior applications. The frame issue is weird considering the breaking strength of the glass.

 

You could put a handrail on the other side and then the glass just becomes a gaurd , sometimes they make an issue with no top cap ( protected edge ) for the tempered , sometimes not

 

treat the area like a wall. building out of a series of removable panels that are held together by the handrails. the only things you would need to do is come up with one large post that goes from top to bottom to tie it all together. i really wish I could take what I am seeing in my head and put it on here for you. i have another idea that i will try and draw out for you and it's removable as well.

 

I've gone through about 10 different ideas myself, including just putting the existing crap back for now. A friend who came over gave the idea of a post from basement all the way up for the middle post. I also had the idea of just doing continuous posts from bottom stairs to the rails on the top?
