SHOULD I INSTALL A TURBOCHARGER

I have a 2005 tacoma, its 4 wheel drive and its a 4 cylinder. i am very happy with my truck but recently heard that a turbo charger would give me much more power is this true? i am wondering if it would be worth installing one or a wast of my time. also is there any long term effects i dont want to do it if it will effect the longevity of my truck. Thanks

 

A turbo would be all custom and being boosted is the fun part. With everything done right you could make some good power way better then stock but I've never seen it done on a 4 cylinder tacoma? always seen them on the 6 cylinders lol

just giving the OP some incentive

 

there's a lot of tech knowledge needed to get a good turbo setup without your engine exploding

since the OP's asking if a turbo will "add power" i'd assume he doesnt have the technical knowledge to set it up himself

having a shop set up a good turbo will be a custom $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ job

if you have the $$ go for it
otherwise, I'd save my money for a supercharged v6

Boost on a naturally aspirated engine: recipe for failure.

 

If you have to ask "if it will do any damage", then no. Unless like someone else said, you want to pay a shop a TON of $$ to do it. It will involve a full engine rebuild to lower the compression if you want it to last.

Why's that?

 

Well you see, forced induction engines are built stronger. From the rods to the crank to the pistons themselves. Think about it. Forcing air into the engine, using the heat of the combustion gasses. There's a ton more force on the bottom and and top end.

 

i would say if you stayed in a low boost range 6-7psi, you would be fine. I know people who have well over 100k on Trd Supercharged v6's. Now if he thinks he can run 14psi on stock internals than that would be a bad recipe there

 

Superchargers generally run less boost than turbos too.

SUPERCHARGER instead of turbocharger? This will sound ignorant , for all you experts, but I'll appreciate your opinions, my truck is an '06 access cab 4x4 4cyl, manual Taco. 96k miles, runs smooth, up to 23 m/gl!. But I'm also doing research for headers and supercharger or headers and turbocharger? What do you recommend?

 

For most trucks, putting diesel in your tank will achieve the turbocharger effect.

To answer your question, I would say DON'T install a turbocharger. But hey thats me.

 

I wouldn't, it might be fun in the short term but i'd bet it'll be more of a hassle in the long run when it comes to repairs and whatnot.
