09 v6 Taco, what mods to do for MPG?

just wondering what some mods are that I can to gain MPG on the taco even if its only a little bit.

4 cyl swap.

or

CAI & headers, large diameter tires.

 

AFE air filter.
But the best mod would be throttle control. I find my scanguage very helpful in that area, shows me where my sweet spots are.

 

Light foot mod

Inflate the tires closer to their max, less rolling resistance.

 

I have been looking everywhere for a way to get better mpg sense my lift and bigger tires. I need help here too.

 

How are you guys hurting since you went up a larger tire size? I'm running 285's and I still get 17-17.5 mpg city! Shit I'm not complaining at all!

 

large diameter tires? that's gonna hurt mpgs, not help it.

 

On occasion with my 33s I still get into the 20s with mpg.

 

Well I’m monitoring this tank the best I can to do. So far I used a little bit over a quarter tank and I’m at 162 miles. Since I hit that mark the gas gauge seems to be going down a lot faster though.

This has been all Hwy going 65mph

I will update at fill up to see how my MPG was.

 

Yea the gauge isn't very accurate. Mine will take over 100mi to move from full... then just start rapidly falling from there. After a half a tank it's gunna go quick. Though I do drive A LOT so... lol.

Honestly, if you want better MPG's, buy a DD civic or something.

 

my truck keeps gets better mileage especially since
1. Winter is over no mixed gas, no weight in bed, winter tires off
2. scangauge usage finally dialed in
3. truck finally breaking in more mileage on the odo.

Very happy with mpg.

well sure I expected a loss but if you read other replays people are still getting 17+ with same tire size I'm running. Time for a scangauge I guess.

 

Larger tires will hurt mpgs not help it. Given the same weight, a larger diameter tire will always be more difficult to turn. The rotational moment of inertia increases as a square of the distance. You can prove that to yourself by taking a broomstick and a short pipe of the same weight. The short pipe is easier to twirl and stop than the longer broomstick.

Also, a CAI and headers allow more air to flow, which allows you to burn more fuel. More power, but not better mpg.

 

too many variable with individual driving habits. YMMV will always be in play.

 

BUT, more HP will allow a little less input to the throttle. You CAN get better mileage with HP/torque gains. BUT, most don't due to the use of said throttle.

as one other wise person said, only "mod" that will help will be the "light foot mod".

say you purchase headers, exhaust and intake. you drop over $800. say you get at most 1 extra mpg. do the math and you'll find out it will take you forever to break even on the $800 amount....

spending a ton of money on mods to save mpgs never really made sense to me, as i have done the math, and no matter how you look at it, spending money to make a more efficient vehicle never really pans out...

 

Ya... As soon as I get this Blue smoke problem under control I'm gonna mod shit s outta it. Either way it wont get great mpg but at least it will sound good and tote my toys without getting passed by everyone on the passes.

 

Are you sure your calculating your MPG correctly? Use a GPS to calculate your mileage, or if you dont have one.... use one of those measured miles to figure out your speedo error with bigger tires. Mine was about .9 miles on the odo for every true mile I drove. Without entering in a correction, my mileage was only ~15mpg. Larger tires are kinda a cheat to make sure your warranty lasts longer
