I'm an idiot. I'm looking to buy a camper top and I was curious what features are most important to look for.

The features that I'm really interested in are win-doors and removable front window.

I will be using it to haul cargo most of the time and maybe sleeping back there occasionally.

How much should I expect to pay for a new one? How much do the stores bargain on them?

Good questions. I've been looking around they the manufacturers are pretty proud of those things.

I've been searching craigslist for almost a year. I occasionally come across a tacoma for sale with 1 installed, but then they tell me to bugger off.

I'm thinking about going new so I can get the win-doors and removable front glass.

My Snugtop XV was about $2000 with options including sliders on the side (no pop-out windows), the fold down front window, and a yakima rack. I called around to every Snugtop dealer in the state, and got prices ranging from $1800 to $2500 for the same shell... In other words, check around, get quotes, and you'll find that the dealers are pretty flexible on price. Wound up working the local dealer down $250 before I bought it there. Prices were relatively similar for an ARE Z-Series shell, maybe a little more, but I would have had to drive 100 miles to get one at the time.

I bought a Leer 100XQ. Paid $1560 US for it in Oct. of 2008. The only option I added was a removable back window (for cleaning).

I checked around and got prices from all of the dealers within 2 hours of my home. Found the best deal and got it. The dealer would not budge at all on price. I did get a $75 discount coupon from the Leer website though.

I bought my XTR for $1700 back in July of '05. The Snugtops are a little pricey, but like bajamoon said, you have that extra capability up top with those runners and tubes. It's nice to see that they made this model for the 2nd-gens like yours Rob. Best part is hardly anyone buys this model probably because of the price, but it has a cool style all its own. Mine's 4 years old now and still holds like new.

Because of the buy back tacomas, there are a ton of first gen caps around here on craiglist. Not so many newer gen, seen a couple avg price used $800-$1000.

The A.R.E. I had on my tundra had the fold-down front sliding window for cleaning & a slightly bigger back door for getting taller things in the back like a trash can. The rack track on top was a nice feature too. It ran about $1700 new. Probably close to $2k now.

I've been looking for one forever, finally settled on a bestop. Keeps things sorta dry, doesnt lock, folds away for larger things, light as a feather, no roof weight capacity.

    I researched leer and snugtop,

snugtop has a bit more structure 300lb capacity vs 200lb on the leer (per the canopy dealer). The high end snugtops "supersport" and xtra vision were 2100+ and they would not discount. I ended up getting the Cab-Hi for 09 longbed = $1400 with on-line coupon (mainly because on lot in my color). It has the folddown front glass/carpet. It has the piano hinge vs 2 hinge. Per the dealer the piano hinge is much stouter in case you spend time off road.

Still like the supersport with the popout side windows, full glass back and cam lock system!
Similar Leer models were 200-300 less.

I'm lookin for one too lscocee. Local dealer sells Ranch, I priced one at 1300 with the side open doors and fold down front window. Sounds like a cheap top after reading the price on the others above.
