CAI, dynomax turbo exhaust system, tinted windows medium on the fronts to match the backs, hid kit hi and low beam, pop and lock tailgate, painted calipers red with caliper paint, put 2.25' leveling kit in front and a 1" block in the rear. its now level and rides WAY better (readylift)>way nicer than the revtek my buddy has i think its garbage imo<, hurst "T" shifter, 18 x 10 american racing (can't remember the name) chrome rims with badass 5 inch lip :), 12 inch rockford fosgate punch with rockford fosgate 600 watt amp, bushwacker fender flares (cheaper than replacing the one i wrecked lol) ,kc light bar with kc lights, toyota aluminum stamped skid plate, and a skull front license plate. More mods to come, thinking a 6 inch lift and arb bumper etc etc.
    I just don't know. So I thought I'd ask.

If you have the tacoma that comes OE with the factory rear electric locker can you still just get gears or is it a pain in the ass?

What I am asking is am I able to keep the electric rear locker if i do decide to go to 4.88s ?

    Any help is appreciated.

Get back lost power from putting big tires on your truck Imagine running a 37in tire on factory gears! Truck will be so slow and horrible on fuel and will struggle. Change some gears so that those huge tires will feel like factory ones and your truck will gets its balls back

once you put bigger tires on a gas vehicle you tend to lose your low end torque. When you replace the gears you can get back to having stock power or more depending on which way you go with the gear ratio. The higher the ratio the more low end torque you get.

this gets alot more technical but just a general idea for ya

It's all a mechanical advantage. For us autos, our 1st gear is a 3.52 to 1 ratio and the factory gears in the diff are 3.727 to 1. Assuming you are in 4Hi, that means that every 3.52 times your crankshaft rotates, your driveshaft will rotate once and then every 3.727 times your driveshaft rotates, your axles and tires will rotate once. So you multiply those two ratios together and your get about 13.119. That means every 13.119 times your crankshaft rotates your tires will rotate once. Gears offer a mechanical advantage. The higher your ratio number is the less force it takes to rotate the tires, but the more rotations you have to apply to get 1 full rotation of the tires. Our V6's put out 266 ftlb of torque at 4000rpm at the motor. So assuming you are at 4000rpm the motor is putting our 266 ftlbs of torque to the tranny. The tranny's gear ratio turns that into 266*3.52= 936.32 ftlbs of torque on your driveshaft. Then your diff gears will turn that into 936.32*3.727= 3489.66 ftlbs of torque on your axles.

By changing your diff gears from 3.727's to 4.88's you turn that 3489.66 ftlbs into 936.32*4.88= 4569.24 ftlbs of torque. More torque turns the wheels easier but the cost is a higher rpm.

4Lo works the same way. The transfer case is right behind the tranny so the tranny puts out the same 936.32 ftlb and the transfercase (having a low range of 2.567 to 1 ratio) turns that into 2403.53 and then the diff turns that into 8957.97 ftlbs with 3.727's or 11729.24 ftlbs with 4.88's.

These numbers aren't perfect for many reasons though. 1 your probably aren't sitting on your peak numbers all the time, 2 not all tacomas will hit the same peak numbers, and most importantly 3 numbers are lost to the rotational weight of the drivetrain and weight of wheels and tires, etc. Like we are rated at 236 hp at the motor but on a dyno you will only get about 180-190 hp at the rear wheels. Dyno's calculate it to a 1 to 1 ratio to factor our gearing and tire diameter and give you a rough idea of how much power is lost to rotational mass of the drivetrain and tires.
