in-line muzzleloaders/black powder guns

how many here shoot...well really,any form of black powder? i am thinking about buying a new one soon, since i sold my ols as dirt cva bobcat a while back. it was cool.....old style pour the powder and pack everything.............but with the number of in-line's there are now, and how much more accurate they can be.....im gonna get an in-line. the t/c contender is an awesome gun...but way outta my price range. plus.....im a pretty big cva fan anyway, so i'll probably stick with them. i had been looking at a cva optima elite with interchangeable barrels, and the price isnt too bad.......................but i came across a cva wolf, which is basically the same break action style of the the optima elite, with out the interchangeable barrels. it still uses a 209 primer, but it comes in black/blued instead of stainless and camo. i will be sticking with .50 caliber.............45 is nice, but unnecessary around here.

anyone have any experience with the cva wolf??

 

I've got a Traditions Remington 1858 in .44
Love it. Finally found a shop that sells real black powder instead of pyrodex.
Had it out last weekend, plan to take it out again. Would like to use it for deer in the future, it seems to be more than up to the task.

 

me and my dad both hunt with black powder..I forget the guns off the top of my head, but there both T/C guns. Actually, i took a nice fat doe this past january with it. I love it, but you gotta be right on, since you only have one shot..lol

 

Have been looking into a BP rifle as well. haven't made up my mind. Do I want a reproduction of a historic rifle, or a modern setup such as the CVA. I've shot both, if you want something for hunting and easy use/maintenance you can't lose. I have used modern stuff for hunting, and gotten into BP for the historic fun. If I go deer hunting this fall in BP season, that may change.

 

I LIVE for black powder. I absolutely LOVE my rifle too, its actually the only weapon I have killed a deer with. I have a Thompson Black Diamond. It is well built, and inexpensive

 

thanks for the replies. i love traditional black powder......its fun to shoot, but for hunting, i think in-line will be a good choice. i think im gonna look into the cva wolf a lil more. i know there are better guns out there, but for the price that they have on the wolf.....great deal, plus the reviews i have read are pretty good too.

 

just went and picked up a cva wolf a lil while ago. it will be a few weeks before i hve time to take it out and shoot.

 

Did some work on one a few months back. Set the scope if you use one low as you can. He went with the see thru's and had nothing but issues. We removed the front a rear sights, put low rings on it with a Nikon scope.
Shoot's 1" high at 150 yards. Nice smoke pole. He shoots 100 grains, with a 240 grain Hornady XTP, with Hornady sabots.

awesome....thanks for the info Bill. i think for now, im gonna use the stock sights and no scope just to see how it does.....maybe up to 75 yards or so, but i will eventually get base and rings for it. any idea what base/rings are the best for it? i havent even looked online yet to see whats available.

another question.................do they make the jim shockey's american pioneer powder in pellet form?

 

those are awesome!!! my dad had some real oldflintlock and percussions, but im honestly not sure what he did with them before he passed on. wish i coulda got my hands on them.

I have used Burris and Luepold, personally I go with steel over alum. Most cases a 1 piece base with med rings, standard or dual dovetail.

I use the same bullets 240 Hornady XPT when I reload for my .44 mag, I have a slug around here I pulled from a deer last year. Will try to get a pic of it.

 

awesome!!! i have a scope for the cva already............its a tru-glo 3.5x10x42, and its for muzzle loaders. you let me know what you think i'd be best to go with, and let me know a price, and i'll take you up on the offer.

the bullets i'll be using are what i have used before and like alot....some good ol power belt bullets, probably the copper hollow points, 245 grain.

 

That has a 1" tube on the scope right, I will make the call tomorrow and see if I can hook you up. We used a one piece base on my friends, but I will PM you the options. And I bet med rings, but if they still sit to high, we can alway switch them out.

 

yep...its a one inch tube. high mounts dont work with that scope i already found out. mounted them and the scope on my .270.......could never site it in. always shooting way low, and had the scope adjusted all the way up. so i think med mounts or regular mounts will be the way to go.

any idea on the american pioneer powder...whether they make it in pellet form?

 

longbow, do you sell scope mounts and similar parts? I have been looking for a good scope and see through mounts for my black powder

 

i will go ahead and let you know.....if you do get some see thru mounts....use some red loctite on the screw threads so that they wont vibrate loose. that was a major problem i was having on my .270 was the mounts loosening up and wobbling a tad bit...enough to screw up sighting in.

 

All's I believe they make is granular and sticks. Dion't know if it's me, but I had some issues with it. But that all depends on the person.

I know Leupold makes see thru rings for muzzleloaders, personally, well I don't like them. The scope sits so high up, like Will stated sighting in can be a FUN job if you can.

Personally, I would go with a scope with a lower power setting, like 2X7 or even a straight 4 power.
I have a 3X9 Omega on mine and never had it above 3 power. I can't get any good deals on scopes, now a days the big companies Nikon, Burris, leupold have a locked in price on them. SWFA has the best prices I have found, if they have it in stock. Another place is Obtics planet, other than getting lucky at a gun shop really can't help you on scopes.
