I got rear ended by a YJ. Bent one of the frame tabs but didn't total the truck. I drove away. She didn't.

Not saying you can't drive away, but frame damage is a sketchy road... Typically it's best to total it, unless you plan on turning it into a dedicated offroading rig that you never get rid of or something like that and the frame is fixed and replaced.

It depends on what's bent and how badly. In my case, no major frame damage. It was repairable.

That doesn't mean the CarFax report is going to be clean-it will show the truck was in an accident and that part you can never be made whole for.

I wish insurance companies were forced to address the loss in resale value a repaired vehicle will have-even a minor collision can impact the resale value.

That is primarily the reason for pushing for totaling out frame damage. It is pretty much the only way to make up for that resale value loss and frame damage is pretty easy to swing a total out of.

Personally I would keep the vehicle, but I am pretty invested in mine and beat on it pretty hard so it is just a matter of time before I damage the frame myself, so resale value isn't going to be a big concern for me.

The dollar value of the claim would have to make the case for totaling the vehicle. Maybe someone in the insurance industry can answer. But the rule of thumb I've heard says if the airbags deploy, good chance it will be totaled. If the frame is bent and repairable, it will be fixed. I think the dollar value is around 25 or 30 percent of the blue book value-I'm not 100% about that though.

Even if the frame was replaced, your vehicle would still come back as having been in a wreck.

They were discussing that in the rearended threads and I think it is closer to 75% of blue book value nowadays. One of the people said that the cost of the frame itself was $10,000 right off the top, then however many hours of labor it takes to swap it (depends on if the frame can just be straightened or not), plus all the other stuff that needs fixed. Parts and labor are so expensive nowadays that even with these high value rigs, it can be somewhat easy to convince your insurance to just total a vehicle if you get close to that total percentage, but don't actually reach it. You just have to be persistent and adamant about it I guess.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
No I really don't know what Texas has to offer, the reason for my question. Not the only reason I have four wheel drive, but the reason I justify two vehicles with it. I play and have fun on seasonal roads, but I am sure we have minimal areas compared to many others. I can't even ride my 4-wheeler off property with out going to PA or taking a 4 hour trip to the Adirondacks. You have to remember where I live and who runs this state

    That is amazing!!

Your answer is the reason why I asked. I have never been there and really ignorant of what it's like. Unfortunately I don't have family or friends anywhere close. Maybe someday I can talk the wife into a roadtrip!! :D

Thanks all for enlightening me, although I made need to add another destination to my bucket list. ;)

In Texas we use the heater to get to work and the AC to get home. We have normal swings of 25-30 degrees a lot of days here. Our saying is "if you don't like the weather in Texas, wait a few "minutes" because it will change". :)
