Well I had surgery on Friday and My truck has not been drivin sense thursday afternoon until today (Monday 2pm). When I got in my truck and started it up a big cloud of blue smoke rolled by my passenger window:eek:! I noticed blue smoke a couple of times during the winter on startup when we had lots of snow and cold weather. The truck had also been sitting for a couple days. The truck is a 09 with almost 10k miles. I took it to the dealer during the winter and it sat there for a day or 2 and when they started it up they didnt see any smoke. They documented it and said they can put me on a oil consumtion watch... I switched to syn motor oil last oil change about 700 miles ago. What the hell is causing this smoke?
    Thanks

    Bret.

I don't have the same problem with blue smoke, but i did notice that in the winter my exhaust was more prevalent than all of the other vehicles on the road. Had me worried. If you have a smog place nearby they could probably tell you what kind of pollutant you are releasing and you might be able to trace it backwards. Sorry i couldn't be more help, but if this were an older car i would have better info.

My truck can sit for two weeks and I don't notice any blue smoke... but I will check next time she sits for a few days.

If you've had it to the dealer and they didn't see any smoke, next time it sits a few days, have a video camera set up and tape the smoke...

Ya I would have done that this time but I did not think this would happen when it wasnt cold out. I thought the cold weather had something to do with it when I first noticed it.
    Im very concerned about this...

As I'm sure you know the blue smoke is oil. It sounds like to me it could be a valve guide. I would try to take it to the dealer agin on a hot day after you drive it for about 100 miles or so to make sure that the engine is warm and park it. If it is a valve guide the hot oil in the head will have a lower viscosity (be thinner). That will allow it to flow into the cylinder and will cause blue smoke on start up. Or try it at your house first to save you the trip.

could be a leaky valve guide. nearly impossible to verify without a teardown, but not doing much harm unless it gets worse....

Mine did that after I put too much oil in it. I had to drain some out and haven't seen it since.

So its possible the dealer put too much oil in the truck when it was in for a oil change?

yea to much oil could cause higher than normal block pressure and sling to much oil on the crank. just check the oil and see. I have ran into some things that the dealer did that where wrong so just cause they do it does not mean its always correct. I have learned to always check there work.

mine does it just a tiny bit...but what do you expect from 129,000 miles? Just keep and eye on the oil level.

Ya that have you bring the truck in every few weeks to check the level on the dipstick. I going to check the dipstick tomorrow when the truck is parked on level ground. Its on a real slanted driveway right now.

I'm gonna let the truck sit all day today and video tape the exhaust on startup to see if i cant catch it in the action on tape.

I started the truck but no blue smoke on initial startup although the first time i punched the throttle to about 2200rpms (the first rev you hear) it blew out some blue smoke. The truck sat for 16 hours or so...

Hard to tell the color of the smoke in the vid....It kinda looks like water vapor, wich is normal. Has your oil level been dropping since this has been discovered?

Ya i should have had the camera further away from the truck. When i looked in the side mirror i could see the lingering blue. I have not checked the oil yet because the truck is on a slope. Im headed out for a few things ill check it when i get back.
