I just noticed over the last week with temperatures at -14 or so that a white haze that resembles salt spray is forming over my tailpipe. It wipes off like frost would. Washed it off at the car wash and it formed again by the time I got home. The truck is a 2008 Tacoma DCLB TRD 4.0 V6. It covers the entire side from the mudflap and onto the bumper.
Is it normal for this to happen or is this the sign of possible antifreeze head gasket problems.
Let me know if you have experienced the same problems or if you have any idea as to what the problem may be. I have been looking at all the Tacomas in the parking lot at work and none seem to have the white haze over the tailpipe.
    Thanks,
    Greg

i have experienced that as well, i just assumed it was the exhaust freezing. happened on my 2008 tacoma, 2010 tundra and also my 2012 tacoma. it was more noticable on my 2008 since it was black.

Have you noticed a drop in your coolant level.
Does this happen on a regular basis in sub zero conditions, and if so how long has it been happening?

i honestly don't pay much attention to it, sorry, it is pretty rare, i notice it more after coming out of the car wash, maybe that has something to do with it.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you had a head gasket leaking that badly, you would most likely be misfiring and/or overheating.

There's a lot of water vapor in engine exhaust. If your vehicle body is cold enough and the exhaust is flowing around it, you'll get condensation and 'frost'.

If the head gasket was leaking it would not freeze any way

When it's that cold, I get all sorts of white haze all over and around the tail pipe. Never worried about it.

Thanks for all the informative replies.
I guess I saw the white and immediately thought that white smoke=head gasket problems. Upon further examination today while it was light out I realized it was frost. Weird that with all this cold weather it just started happening yesterday. Thanks again for all the replies.
    Greg.

I think its pretty common, I get it in temps below 15f here in Illinois. It forms on mudflap and rear 1/4 panel.
