Illegal to unlock your phone

Well you have to buy a phone to get a plan.

The contract only says that you will give us 2 years of your money and we (the carrier) will give you a subsidized phone.

If you buy a phone at msrp, you only need them to start a plan for you. meaning you CAN unlock it because the phone you have is not subsidized.

I am not sure if you can start with an open normal contract with buying the phone out right with a new contract.

But who would drop that kind of money

Yeah, a privilege I bought and paid for and should be able to do whatever the hell I want with.

Its like buying a Tacoma from one dealer and not being able to trade it in at another.

Don't fret. Free speech is a constitutional right. That includes the right to spell it the way you like.

 

You can't usually be sued or fined over technical details you don't know. Thus, to be enforceable, I suspect the carrier would have to advise you (prior to purchase) of the phone's locked condition and any prohibition they might have about modifications. Further, my phone (purchased outright - $200) was purchased prior to the law, so that might also impact enforceability. Otherwise, I could probably sue the carrier for selling me a defective phone.
