Is the scratch on the bullet or on the shell casing? Does it run the length or across from side to side?

My first Mosin had a burr in the chamber that would put scratch across the casing and made it very difficult to extract the round after firing. I used a round file to smooth it down and now have no problems.

    Good luck!!

The scratch is mid casing after firing and it runs length wise...hmmmm.

So I am guessing it is after firing and the casing expands and has friction on removal but not during bolt rotation (which would be an across scratch).

Am I right? I can post of pic of the casing tonight.

    I appreciate the dialogue here.

Sounds right. Put your little finger in the bore - carefully - and see if you can feel a sharp ridge. Might be a burr or might just be something caught in a groove. I worked mine over with a round file and smoothed it down slowly.

I thought I might still have a steel casing that showed the scratch pattern on mine so I could post a photo - can't find one, though.

Mine looked like a reverse L where it would scratch as it rotated and then down the length as it extracted.

    Here are the casing scratches.

I will shoot it tomorrow and see if the bolt is better. Problem is, if all my scratches are linear, then is it truly the expanded casing that is causing the sticky bolt after a couple shots?

On a lighter note, the better condition M44 is being shipped and my scope / mount has been ordered.

Looks pretty consistent - probably not a burr. Hopefully the cleaning you did will do the trick! Can't wait to see the pictures of the new M44!!

Shot the M44 that I have now. The chamber scrubbing with a bronze 20 ga brush and a drill seemed to do the trick for now. I went through about 40 rounds tonight and it never got tight or restricted in working the bolt. Casing scratches were gone too.

Its like a whole new gun. Thanks for the advice.

Will post some pics of the new gun next week.

Here is the first M44 that I picked up at a gun shop in Macon with the Brasstacker scope combo kit installed.

Here is the M44 from Gunbroker. Not a scratch on it and the wood still has texture to it. All numbers match and the barrel isn't counterbored. Will shoot it sometime this week.

My 91/30 came in from ATI and it is mechanically sound, but it looks like the stock was sloppily varnished before it made it here. Probably going to get a synthetic stock and tri-rail mount for it. May refinish the wood stock myself and keep as a backup.

Too much. $600. I have been looking for one of these in good condition, matching numbers, and didn't want one that had been counterbored. I came across this one and the bids were in the $200 range. Got interesting the last hour...probably by one of the seller's buds, but I was in a mood to buy so it went to 600.

They typically have better quality machining. The round receivers were produced as quaickly as possible during war years.
