x2, you said it was a secret so he could tell us. haha. I would like details though. haha. Adam was good. I would like to know why 2nd gens have this issue. As far as I know 2nd gen diffs are the same as 1st gen diffs. Are 2nd gens really just that much more powerful and heavier. I would think S/C'd TRD 1st gens would tear them up just as much. Maybe they do and we just don't hear about it from how few of them there are.

I've have come to the conclusion that out of every 4 people who say they are coming to a meet only 1 will actually show up.

haha i was half kidding about that.

He went out playing with the truck and the dogs and slid down this ditch and almost flipped the truck and got stuck and was rescued by a passing heep. He then tried to back up onto the road once unstuck with the e-brake on:boom::facepalm:. Blew that sucker up, took many teeth out of the ring gear. As he said in auto tech terms...its fucked.

Damn! Just riding it on the ebrake did it huh? Time to regear!

I had heard some theories about the diff housing itself being weak, but I am leaning towards it being the gears. Maybe the Toyota 3.73's aren't hardened enough. Almost all fullsize vehicles have run 3.73's and not had problems.

I have been told that after market gears are hardened, so that may explain why I haven't heard of anyone that has regeared blowing up their diff a 2nd time. I went though two sets of OEM gears, although I didn't actually blow up the 2nd set and that was probably more due to a poor install than the gears themselves.

1st gen and 2nd gen elockers are the same. There is the Toyota 8.4" diff and the Toyota 8.0" e-locker diff in both 1st and 2nd gens.

ok here it is.... I went up to a place called table rock to let my dogs run and do some light wheeling. there is a spot where the trail cuts across a very steep almost I would say 40+ degree incline...steep as shit!... my left tire slid into a deep washout in the middle of the trail and the rut fell off the left side of the road into the draw. well my truck went with the rut and it got sucked down off the train and into the draw. the rut was soo deep my suspension ran out of down travel and the left front of my truck dipped down real far and and fast my ass end came up as i was sitting sideways on the hill with my driver side door pointing down the hill. and I literally almost rolled down the draw about 200 feet.

I steered my nose down hill somehow and rode out the wash and ended nose up towards the trail. after i gather my wits I remembered a guy in a cj at the top of the hill spotting elk and ran up the draw to the trail and back up to the top where he was.

he was there still and watched me almost roll down the hill... his name is Darell, and is one of the nicest guys I ever met. He asked me if
i was ok and wanted to know if he could help....thank god the guy had a wench but he needed to get his extra set of cables and an anchor point for his jeep.

An hour later he cameback with his son Dustin and the rest of the stuff. They wenched me out, got me all the way back onto the trail and to a point where
i was safe to get off the wench line.. I put the e brake on for extra safety and talked about a plan of attack for getting me the rest of the way out. we came up with a plan and went to start getting me 100% home free. and the my rear end blew..to preface this next part... I have never used my e brake until today.... so heres the rest.

I undid to tow line and restarted my truck, put it back into 4 low with the locker and decided to go forward a bit and the try to back up. well the truck would'nt move...so I gave it a bit more gas thinking
i was just a little stuck and bang!!!!there goes my rear end....all because of a FUCKING E-BRAKE!!!!!!!!

I got it out the rest of the way be reversing out to pavement, which was not very far, after i figured out why my rear end blew( FUCKING E-BRAKE!)...I have pics on my phone.... Ill put the two up i took while in shock.

sooo Brady... where did you get your gears?

Max broke an axle. His gears were fine. He just locked his rear locker and drove home with the one rear tire.

That is crazy Andy!! I got my gears through ECGS. As far as I know it is the cheapest way to go unless you can do the setup gears yourself.
    http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/c-62270-assembled-3rds-clamshells.html

If you stay with 3.73's, you are looking at like $700+... If you plan to gear lower you are looking at like $2200-$2300.

Well in that case, get yourself an ARB up front while you are at it, oh and use a solid spacer instead of a crush washer on that rear diff to save yourself a lot of trouble!
