Fan speed switch not working.

Fuse?
Resistor completely blown?
Blower motor dead?

 

Check in that order too.

 

My 06 has just started doing the same thing. When I first start the truck, the fan runs for 30 seconds, shuts off, then starts up again. Now intermittently the fan will only run on HI. Tacorider, the purpose of the resistor is to divert voltage (and current) from the fan motor, giving the motor more than one speed.

My fan quit working on all but high speed around 1-2 years ago. I took it out blew ou the dust from the brushes, up a dab of grease on the bearing and put it back together. It is still working! I would try this first before the resistor.

 

Tnx AST, makes sense to try the motor first. I will be very happy if your fix works and don't have to replace the resistor.

 

I believe the resistor is switched out of the circuit on Hi speed, so you may want to check the fuse first, bad fan motor second, then pull the resistor third.

 

Here are the specs for testing the resistor (from 2006 manual). As others, mine (2007) also works when I jiggle the connector. My #1 and #2 connectors show excessive resistance. Current pricing is $24 at http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/toyota~resistor~blower~87138-04052.html

Based on all the previous replies/posts, I spoke to Toyota Dealer today....my blower/fan only works on high also. They gave me the TSB-0149-11 for the fix. There's a new resistor unit and a new connector that has to be crimped in. The Resistor old part number was 87138-04050, replaced by 87138-04052 and the pigtail is

$31 82141-04M40

82141-04M40. They have their own wire connectors with the part #82999-12030.
I was quoted 52.53 shipped. Without connectors is 47.81 shipped.
I've attached the TSB (hopefully)

 

Could you take a picture of the repaired wires?

 

New to the forum today and when I came home from dealership I googled the part numbers from the repair to see what the deal was and found this thread. Fan worked only on high and I did not inspect the old parts--just dropped it off for the dealer to do it under the certified used warranty.

Parts installed were:
87138-04052 resistor

82141-04M40 wire, instrument



Can't see much about the splice but you can see the difference with the plug and resistor vs. the old parts in earlier posts.

 

Great thread! Like others, I have been plagued by the "high-or nothing" blower. Before if I wanted something other than high I would have to find the worst dirt road and drive fast thru the bumps and washboards to get it to work! If only for a few days. So I figured it was a loose connection, "somewhere", but where? Ahhh, so thats where...a stupid connection, by the passengers feet, nice!! In the winter its ok, but in the summer you sweat or freeze...at least it was blowing air! As for the fix, fortunately I have the burnt connector issue, as mentioned and illustrated above...so I followed the instructions as directed, and had success til I removed my hand from the connector, then no dice!. I had to take it 1 step further, and add a tooth pick in between the clip, so I could maintain connection. I'm sure folded cardboard would work too. Thanks so much!!

2.7taco is right on for my situation (intermittent, and not cured by new resistor block)- the problem is in the harness at the connector to the resistor. Same as 2.7 reports -- 3rd pin. But I also noted that the resistor block has its 2 center pins intentionally shorted internally. So jumping between center 2 wires on harness side (I used a crimp on splice) provides the necessary connectivity by making the malfunctioning pin redundant.

 

You da man! This will be my project for this weekend.

 

So I finally got my new TSB blower motor resistor and pigtail installed and am happy to report that everything went great. The instal was easy and the fan now works as it should. Its nice to be done with that. Anyway, here's a few pictures for reference for anyone that needs to do this.

This is what my defective resistor looked like. It has the typical burned look on the white with blue stripe wire. I replaced this resistor twice so this was the third one.

Here are the old resistor pins. I had used some dielectric grease on them and you can see that there is a little bit of it remaining on them.


The pins in the new resistor appear to be thicker so they should make a better contact.

And the new resistor is installed as per the TSB instructions. I don't like the crimps and electrical tape that they specified, it seems like a bit of a hack job. I will re-do this job when the weather is a bit nicer. I intend to solder the wires together and use heat shrink to seal it up - it will be a more secure and permanent repair. I was supprised that Toyota came up with the crimps and electrical tape as their official repair method.

 

I did exactly what you did for a fix, but now I am getting a humming noise like the fan is making a loud hummm when the air is running. What has happened to cause this? I did the crimps not solder

 

I don't know what could cause the hum. Mine seems to work ok with no weird noises. I don't know enough about electrical stuff to offer any ideas but I am curious to know what is going on with it in case mine starts doing something like that.

 

Yeah what is weird is mine did the hum before it only started working on high. It only worked on high for about 2 weeks then started working normal again no hum. Then I figured I'd do the fix, right after the fix the hum is back.... crazy
