Motor Break-in Recommendations

So, I go to pick my new Tacoma up in a few hours. I am pretty excited as I have been waiting a month for it to come in from the factory. As this is my first ever brand new vehicle, I wanted to get some recommendations on breaking the motor in properly. Let me know what you know, or if you have any good links.

it really should be broken in already.
only thing i would say is just take it easy, seeing as you have a standard, and let the clutch break in. ///////you will notice some smell from it for the first 1,000 or so miles.
but some will say it is still good to change your oil after1,000,2,000, or 3,000 miles instead of the factory recommended 5,000 miles.

The user's manual does state that you should avoid towing anything for the first 500 miles. Other than that, I think you're OK.

 

Well my 09 blows blue smoke when its cold and I give it a punch of the throttle. Does anyone else notice this when their 4.0L is cold? The truck has aprox 9500 miles on it and I have been running syn oil for about 700 miles now.

Ok, well thats a little piece of mind. I will probably still take it easy on her for the first little bit, but I will probably just drive it like it should be.

Change the oil at 2,500, then again at 5,000... look at other threads around here to see opinions on when to change to synthetic (if you want to at all).

 

I'm just following the guidelines in the owners manual. No biggie, it's only for a short duration of time. The only thing it really says is no towing for 800 km, try to avoid the same speed for the break-in period, not to go hard on the brakes for the first little while (I forget the mileage) and "avoid" hard accelaration.

It's not like one day the truck will be fine doing a WOT run while the day before it would have broken. Allot is probably like what chris4x4 said, it's a "grace period" that lets people get used to the vehicle before driving it the way they normally would.

 

Plan on changing mine at 500.
I am kind of weird about that.

The service writer at Lexus when I brought my wifes in for some minor thing wanted to know why I wanted the oil changed due to the fact that the engines are built in a sealed air tight hospital O.R.

I explained that I wish to flush out the assembly lubes used when they built it.

I still think it is a good idea. Couldn't hurt.

 

According to a service manager who has toured Toyota's facility, the engines have been ran in the factory and receives fresh oil before leaving the factory.

 

Reason you want to take it easy for the first 500 miles and avoid towing is b/c of the RING & PINION(s). Those do not come broke in from the factory. I took it overall easy on the truck with a few WOT runs. I avoided situations that would allow the Differential to heat up; execisive hwy speed for a long time etc. I now have about 8k on my taco and at 10K service will be dumping the rear lube for M1
