4.0 is a great engine, but until you drive a 4.7 you don't completely understand how amazing that engine is.

Insanely smooth at any RPM, gobs of power and a nice rumble. If I didn't need a bed I would be looking for another 06+ v8 4Runner. It's to bad they stopped using that engine in vehicles in the midsize category.

    This thread is so funny.

It gets lot of action when gas prices go lower.

Then, later, ppl complain about gas prices and low MPG.

    ha ha ha ha

The ppl who have driven the 4.7's wish they had them too haha.

I can attest to those previous posts, my mom's 05 sport 4.7 gets more power and same/better MPG than my 3.4 Taco!

Waiting for "that guy" on TW to do an engine swap.. We wait patiently "that guy"!!

Your wife must have a heavy foot. My wife gets 20-21 in hers(95% city) No kidding on the smooth power though, I drive it from time to time and i find my self going 15 mph over the speed limit because I just don't notice it.
HELL yea they are! I remember when we test drove hers, they had a limited v6 4wd and her sr5 v8(with every option but sunroof and 4wd) it was night and day. I would not be scared to say it would beat my truck by bus lengths in an 1/8 lol

I've always wished they offered the 4.6 engine from the tundra in the tacoma. Fuel mileage would probably be the same as the 4.0l on the smaller truck with more power, and it sounds nice. I test drove the 4.6 tundra and it had some decent power for that size truck. Would be fun in a tacoma.

I am hoping that when the new, redesigned Tacoma is introduced, they have a turbo diesel option. V8 torque with better fuel economy. Hopefully with an 8 speed transmission also.

A V8 would be cool in this truck, but impractical. Wouldn't increase the tow rating would it?

Wow, this thread has been going on for a while. So...anyone put a 4.7 or 5.7 in a Taco yet? Before I bought my 06 I drove a 05 4Runner with the 4.7 and it had a lot of power. Would be fun in a Taco, but probably a lot of $$$ for the gain in power.

One of our other vehicles is a Lexus GX470 (Australian Prado) with the 4.7L V8 engine. The thing is a rocket ship compared to our V6 Tacoma. plus it gets better gas mileage. I would buy a V8 Tacoma in a heartbeat, but given the new CAFE requirements that are coming soon, I'm willing to bet we'll never see one from the factory.

I'd like to see Toyota put a 5.7L in a Tacoma access cab and give it a fox suspension... Make a raptor killer. Thatd be tits.

If I wanted a V8 I would have bought a vehicle with one. I'm guessing MPGs would be worse, and really for a truck that size, I would like fuel economy to be better than it is.

Makes sense, no need for.the 5.7 in a tacoma, not to mention the mpgs suck in the tundra but cause of the size of the truck and what not
One day that will be in my tacoma

It would be awesome, but I'd much rather have a more powerful and fuel efficient V6, and on top of everything make it reliable like the past engines.

I voted no. I would rather have the same 4.0 liter but higher output. Getting an extra 24hp and 40ft lbs out of this motor would be a piece of cake.
