I've been babying my truck since I've got it and today I hit the semi passing gear( didn't floor it) and I heard like the engine was ticking. Should I not baby it all the time and blow it out every once in a while? I let the rpms stay below 2000 at all times since ive had the truck. I've heard that, that wasn't good all the time that it would mess up the tuning of the truck.

On your 08?! So in 5 years you have never gone above 2000 rpms?

yes take it to at least 4500 every once in a while. I do probably once every 2 weeks or so. You probably have a ton of carbon built up in there by now that needs to be blown out.

you have a 4.0 and you baby it? you proabably should of gotten a 4 cylinder. mine hits 4500 rpms a few times a day easy. have almost 90k no issues so far.

I've only had my truck for about a month and a half. Not sure how the previous owner drove it. The last two or three times I've put gas in it I've been putting 93 octane. Should I lay off of 93 or it doesn't matter?

    I use 93. Owner's Manual says I get a little more torque & HP with 93.

Also, you can still find ethanol-free 93 in some places, which will give you a couple'a MPG's over the ethanol-laden crap.

Run the Premium Ethanol-Free gas and open up the throttle now and then. Your engine will love you for it!

wont make a difference. there are plenty of threads on this already. unless you are at WOT (wide open throttle) all the time there is no need for premium gas.

also as others have stated, its good to "get on it" from time to time to blow all the carbon build up out of the pipes.

After getting the tranny flush done and 100k service yesterday I had a little fun on the 40 mile drive back to Tally.

I normally drive slow. Can't afford the gas and don't want to put extra wear on my engine, but I do love how quick this truck is when I want it to be.

I kinda have a lead foot. Less now because of gas prices. But mine does hit 4500 a couple times a day. It has 73,000 miles and still running strong.

Yeah I run my 2.7 up around 5k RPMs about once a week. My regular weekly routine takes me up a steep but short (3/4 mile) highway incline that's the perfect opportunity to slap her into 3rd and gas her good.

You will burn less gas keeping the RPMs lower, but that doesn't mean it's the most efficient burn, so there will be carbon buildup without a good blowing out once in a while. It is good to run it hard once in a while, like every couple weeks or at least once a month. It's a Toyota... as long as you keep up with regular maintenance, and barring any asinine driving behavior, it'll take years of abuse to produce a major failure. So don't worry.

And I'm confident you don't need the high octane fuel. It doesn't burn any cleaner than regular and the additional HP/TQ in the 4.0 is not really very much. If you are concerned about fuel, run the top-tier brands like Chevron or Shell and stay away from the cheap crap. 87 is fine.

    Yes.

I rev my engine to about 4500 or so a couple times a week before I shift.

And once in a while push it right up to to the redline when I am playin in the snow.

88K on the engine, doesn't seem to mind.
