Yeah I'd like to learn exactly how to do this. Maybe even carry some spare parts and fix it on the trail if it ever happened to me

 

You know, I've been thinking about it, but maybe one reason why you and Jeremy were getting hung up trying climb up Fremontina was due to the electronic "aids" on your guys Tacos? I know at some point you either engaged something (ATRAC?) or disengaged something, but I seem to recall that if you don't turn off VSC you can run into issues with throttle control as you try to ascend obstacles due to lack of traction and the computer overriding manual input. Just some thoughts, it was super fun though!

 

Jeremy's truck is a TRD Sport, no locker, no A-trac, etc. Just 4wd Open/Open. I also would like to learn how to fix/repair the u-joint so should it happen we can fix.

 

The upper half of Fremontia trail is quite difficult.

Jerry and Bruce are the only guy's I've seen drive it successfully.

I've watched an experienced driver in a capable but open/open tacoma get cross axled and have to give up after repeated attempts.

Now that my truck's locked front and rear, I've been wanting to give it a go - but couldn't make this trip due to schedule.

I think your suggested approach of one truck with winch, the other as anchor, and a snatch block on the front of the truck being raised sounds like a good approach to try - up to a certain point.

I think it'll stop working and the trucks will start being pulled towards each other once the angle at the snatch block gets wider (bigger) than about 90 degrees.

EDIT - the closer the trucks can be to each other - the better the angle will be. But the more the winch will be pulling sideways against the fairlead, increasing friction.

Another idea:
I also carry a "pull pal" which could possibly be set on the uphill side of McCray or (maybe? on the bank above it maybe??) and set up with a snatch block to be used as a turning block. Not absolutely positive though, as that mountain side is pretty rocky. Wouldn't know if we'd actually be able to set it there without actually trying it. Until then, this idea is pure "web wheeling." ;-)

 

The snatch block would be on a tug strap attached to the downhill vehicle. In an ideal situation, you'd secure the block to a tree or some other solid point (there are quite a few winch points throughout HH). Just not there

I looked at the PP video. Looks like you need a lot of room for that. McCray isn't wide enough and I'm not sure how high you'd want to put that (above the load and keeping in mind that 'above' is relative to the angle of the load). For the PP to work correctly, it looks like the frame and the shovel need to contact the ground during the pull--if the frame is too high, it looks like it will plow. Too low and it might not dig correctly. Looks like a great alternative to a solid anchor point too.
