Need to get aftermarket shocks - which ones though????

Truck is stock, rears are blown/rotted, saw a bunch of sets on e-bay anywhere from 129.00 to 300.00 - was thinking about the race dynamic shocks (which are made by bilstein I think) and have an adjustment on the front strut so you can lift the front up tp 2.5" and correct the rake(truck slants quite a bit towards the front) - I'm also not looking to stiffen this thing up as it is a daily driver - any ideas???? I think the ones you are referring to are the Bilstein 5100 series shocks that are adjustable for the front. From what I hear they are the shizzznet!

 

I don't think you can go wrong with the Bilsteins.

 

So have you guys heard of race dynamics?? Their website says the shocks are made by bilstein....think its a good deal?

 

I went to the website but didn't stay long. I honestly didn't see what they offer. I know that companies like this often package similar things, with little pieces that they make and major parts like the shocks they don't. You can probably shop around and find similar deals. You might be able to find a better price, might not. I'm sure this is good stuff.

will be installing this weekend, should I go with the 2.5" in the front? My truck has quite a rake - I'm going to try and stuff 33s under there(every now and then for off road) as the stock 31s have a mile of room - any thoughts???

With 2.5" up front I think the 33"s will barely fit without rubbing.... maybe.

 

I'm sure you will get some rubbing. With 32's I have had rubbing when aired down. Toy4life put 33's on but went from 16 inch wheels down to 15. I think the 15 inch were much cheaper than the 16 inch.

 

Come to think of it I did experience the rubbing before the lift.

 

attention everyone with questions on larger tires with only 2.5" of lift in front. YOU ARE GOING TO RUB CONSTANTLY WHILE TURNING. I have a 2000 tacoma 3.4L TRD with 6" adjustable coilovers sitting right now at about 5" with a 3" body lift w/ 33 /12.50's R15 and they rub sometimes at full turn when driving slow, and while I'm hunting if I'm turning while in rough terrain they will rub some also. They don't rub bad, but just look at how much lift I had to put on my truck for it not to rub bad. I couldn't ask for a better lift though. It's a fabtech lift system. 6" adjustable up front, and a 4" add a leaf in the rear, along with the fabtech bodylift. The rear is perfect. never rubs, but the front wheel wells of a tacoma suck. You have to jack the hell out of them for them not to rub. Take my advice or not, but this is just my input though on what my truck is doing. Other than this, this is the best offroading/hunting/mudding truck that I have ever had the privilege of driving or owning.

How much did that Fabtech cost you? Did you install it yourself?

 

It is a fabtech suspension lift. The 6" adjustable coilover system I bought from National Tire & Wheel cost me $600 even. The 3" Fabtech body lift cost me $239.00. I also bought 15x10 American Racing AR-23 wheels. They were $110 each- they are excellent looking offroad rims that DO NOT look gaudy and ghettofied like most rims today. I also bought 33x12.50R15 Buckshot Mudders that were I think $140 something a piece. I got a guy to help me put it on for me that I work with. I paid him 500 bucks. That is cheap. If I took it to a business that did just lift kits, they would have probably charged me at least 1200 bucks for install. I can tell you right now, the suspension lift was the easiest to put on, the body lift was harder. But, I didn't want a 9" lift system to put more pressure on my ball joints, front axles, and bearings. That is why I put a 3" body lift on the truck to accompany the 6" adjustable lift. The lift came with 4" rear add-a-leafs. And my front coilovers are jacked up to about 5". My truck is level and the new shocks in the front are 100% better than the POS bilstein gas shocks that came on it stock. Gas shocks suck dude..... they might be nice on the road, but with offroad, the hydraulic shocks outperform the gas shocks ten fold. You can haul ass offroad with the new fabtech hyd. shocks, and they soak up everything without putting you head through the roof of the truck. Just my opinion though. I didn't want an onroad truck even though I drive it everywhere. I wanted an offroad tacoma and that's why I bought this system. Awesome driveability, stable control, and bad ass mud slinger. The ULTIMATE HUNTING TRUCK!!!!! Hope this helped you out.

 

my bad. Earlier I stated that my lift was a 6" suspension lift and a 4" add-a-leaf. That is wrong. My suspension lift is a 3" adjustable coilover system. my add-a-leafs are 2". Plus I have a 3" body lift.

 

Barely any rubbing issues, whaled on it too

 

i put ranchos struts on the front of my 97, monroes in rear which sucked, my 03 is gettin bilsteins like u mentioned

Wow, this thread is old....

Anyway, I haven't tried the Bilsteins, or driven in a truck that has them. The research I did said the Old Man Emu stuff was the best, so that's what I got when the time came. I couldn't be happier.
